Romney's Best Bet: Team With DeMint (BARF ALERT)
US News & World Report ^ | 2011-06-02 | Paul Bedard & Caitlin Huey-Burns

As Mitt Romney's rollout in New Hampshire today of his bid for the 2012 GOP nomination hit several speed bumps with the words "Sarah Palin" seemingly painted on them, talk in Washington turned to who could help him with conservatives if he eventually won the nomination this time and the leading pick was Mr. Tea Party, South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

"It would not be surprising to me to see Mitt Romney" pick DeMint, says Villanova University Professor Lara Brown, who has developed a formula to determine how politicians win the presidency in her book, Jockeying for the American Presidency: The Political Opportunism of Aspirants.

Brown says that DeMint would help Romney with skeptical conservatives, especially those who don't like the healthcare plan he installed in Massachusetts as governor, a topic Palin flicked him on today and the Democratic National Committee had fun with. "He would need to bring over that base he will have a difficult time getting. Like Clinton who reached for Gore, Romney would want someone that has the inside Washington experience," says Brown. [See a slide show of GOP 2012 contenders.]

It wouldn't be that unlikely of a combination, however, since DeMint endorsed Romney in 2008 and hasn't attacked Romney over his healthcare plan.

DeMint himself, however, is considering a run for the presidency, and that has Tea Party members and conservatives buzzing. "DeMint would electrify base and the Tea Party," said a conservative activist. "If he enters the race and wins, there will be a huge sweep of conservatives into all levels of government."

Spaceship Earth to Romney, change parties.

You’ll move the Democrat party toward the center, and the Republican party toward the right, all in one fell swoop.

There are a lot of Lefties worse than this guy. That’s all I’m sayin...

DeMint helped get Romney into the race in 2007, serving as senior advisor to his President Exploratory Committee, and of course, endorsing him.

DeMint also endorsed Lindsey Graham and served as Co-Chairman of his campaign for 2008, anything is possible.

This would be a great ticket without Romney.

Exactly. Then our field is free for a Conservative.

Imagine, a fairly sane person running from both parties.

I disagree with Romney, but compared to Obama, he’s much better.

Just don’t run from our party Mitt. Go away!

He could resurrect Ronald Reagan as his Veep and I still would NEVER vote for him.

So you're applying an unconstitutional religious test for president?

I’ve suggested Ron Paul do the same thing. The more Dem candidates, the less chance that Dem saboteurs will fool around in the open GOP primaries. If Obama continues to run unopposed, then I anticipate massive Dem votes in those open primaries in order to stick us with Mittens and cause a mass defection of conservatives to another party all but ensuring an Obama reelection.

I still can’t fathom how someone with Demint’s voting record could support people like that.

Romney's best bet is to team with Sarah Palin and Allen West.

They can run for office, and he can raise millions of dollars for them. Now that's teamwork!!

It keeps me from being confident in him, but I do think that all conservative pols are more confident and courageous since Palin’s leadership example appeared on the scene, maybe he has changed.
