In February 2009, Alex Zablocki and I used Facebook to organize the New York City Tea Party, one of the first Tea Party protests in the country. Several thousand people joined our Facebook group, which we used to organize our first Tea Party protest. Hundreds of people showed up, we passed around a bullhorn, and we officially became “Tea Party organizers.” Without Facebook our rally would have most likely attracted about 20 people. Facebook was powerful and we knew it. Our next Tea Party rally, also organized through Facebook, brought 12,000 people to City Hall in Lower Manhattan. A social movement had begun. (snip)

Use the FB help system. There is a detailed way to quit and take down all your data, but it’s not immediately obvious. The default way of quitting is exactly the same as if you simply decide not to look any more, all your stuff is still there. A google search might dig it up. I did it once but don’t remember.
I completely agree, which is why you won’t find a whole lot of info. on my FB account.

Yeah, but it’s getting much harder to make the distinction between public and private spheres when you have so many companies in bed with the Federal government, and tech companies directly consulting with the President on political-related matters.

The problem is that you'll end up with something like the Chrysler dealership thingee. Facebook will be able to pull all kinds of illegal shenanigans involving the election, and the FEC & the Justice Brothers Department will studiously look the other way.
Meanwhile, Obama's feral government election enforcers will be coming down on Facebook's competition like a ton of bricks.
Obama's campaign should steer well clear of using Facebook for the 2012 election in the spirit of clean campaigning, but the White House & Zuckerberg will be going at it like horny weasels. We know how the dirty, corrupt law-breaking Chicago organizer operates.
DBrow, using Free Republic is a lousy example, because in the beginning of FR's existence, the White House was using its appointed federal judges to try to put FR out of business. After the illegal Clinton interventions, Bush was studiously neutral about this site.
In this instance, Facebook will become a stealth arm of Obama's Executive branch & re-election campaign.

Facebook is a private company. They can establish their own rules for using the service. No different from NBC, CBS, CNN. To force them to be “balanced” would infringe on their freedom.
You can “tailor” your FB profile to say whatever you want. Against FB rules so of course I don’t do that. But I could be a 20-something fast-food worker into speed metal on FB, with concert pix to match, and unless something went awry nobody’d know (you sure you are who you say you are? Candlebox ain’t speed metal, bro!).
On FR, I have to go look for posts by a particular poster. But on FB, if a “friend” posts what they had for lunch or posts a code for a meetup time and place, I get a notification.
So organizing on FR would mean regularly checking a thread, while on FB my phone goes off when TEA Party Bob posts. And I get email, too. So in that respect it’s easier.
On FR if I started to do coded organizing posts, FBI would find it easy to track. But if it’s one of the googol FB members, it’s much much harder, especially if I post “someone left the cake out in the rain last Saturday an hour past zenith” (meet in MacArthur park at 1 Sat).
Yes, and of course The White House keeps a propaganda page on Facebook with a bunch of paid pro trolls. They’re targeting conservative groups. I suspect Zunkleroy or whatever his name is got a little armtwist and that nice dinner they had.
It’s kindof amusing...they’ll put up a pic of Obama in the back of a limo looking studiously out the window...and the slobbering and drooling about their thoughtful intelligent president makes one rather want to reguritate.
Thread watching would be hard but you could do it with
freep mail.
Facebook would find protection under the Citizens United case which stated that corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited.
Have you tried editing your e-mail to an account that you never use?
I have one set up for just that kind of thing.
It's often easier to cause heartburn from within the belly of the beast. Who's gonna know if you really believe the mindless, liberal statements you post anyway? You can be whoever you want to be. All that's needed is an email address and those are free.
