Two agencies have offered rewards for information in connection with the slaying of a Bexar County Sheriff's Office sergeant ambushed on the East Side early Saturday.

Sgt. Kenneth Vann, 48, was en route to a call for a shooting around 2 a.m. Saturday, when a small white car pulled up next to his marked patrol car at a red light at Loop 410 and Rigsby Avenue, officials said.

Shots were fired — likely from a high-caliber semiautomatic weapon, according to Bexar County officials — out of the white car's front passenger window. Bullets struck the passenger-side windows of Vann's patrol car, killing him, officials said.

San Antonio police and the U.S. Marshals Service are helping the sheriff's office investigate the murder, and those agencies along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI staffed a mobile command post in a nearby Walmart parking lot. By Sunday morning, the post had been disassembled.

Crime Stoppers and the U.S. Marshals are offering rewards totaling $10,000 for information regarding the fatal shooting, and tipsters are asked to please call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-7867 or the sheriff's office, 210-335-6000.

Thanks. That makes it much clearer. Looks most like a gang initiation then. (Could be that they were following him looking for their chance, but more likely any cop would have done.)

Possibly.

During the last five years there were two similar murders. In both instances the victim was in his parked car. The killer stepped up and sprayed each with automatic gunfire. Never heard what motivated the attacks. I don’t think the killers have been caught.

Be it a gang initiation or done for some other reason, the brazen nature of this assassination will be taken as a quest for justice by every law enforcement agency in the state.

I don’t think even slithering across the border will protect the killer or killers.

The ambushed and murdered Sherrif Sergeant was a Marine who served in Desert Storm.

In addition to his outstanding service to Bexar County, do you think he might also qualify as a hero?

About as much as this other fella from Bexar Countywas: Juan Seguin

Who is going to supply the American drug users and addicts with their daily high if not the Mexican drug cartels?

You have at least a 50-50 chance of being correct. It sucks thinking that a Fed with a badge was quite likely the man responsible for the death of Sgt. Vann.

I am glad you live in a country where you can bitch about this stuff and not get killed by the secret police. Then again, based on your writings, I’m guessing you believe these guys do that stuff too

Stayfrsoty showed extremely poor form posting as he did on a thread involving a fallen officer. That said, if you don't think that you can easily be a victim of police, you aren't paying attention to the news.

I’m starting to think they’re not even in Texas anymore. It it was actually an organized hit, they were likely out of the state within hours. Maybe California by now, maybe Mexico within hours. Hard to say.
