All four homes in raid tied to Guerena family
Arizona Daily Star ^ | 6/28/2011 | Fernanda Echavarri

Records released by the Pima County Sheriff's Department this week show that the four houses served with search warrants the morning of May 5 - when Jose Guerena was shot and killed by a SWAT team - are less than four miles apart and are all connected to the Guerena family.

And while initial reports were that doctors told the Guerena family that Jose had been shot 60 times, the Pima County medical examiner's preliminary report says he was shot 22 times. In its sole briefing on the incident, the Sheriff's Department said SWAT team members fired 71 rounds.

Aside from releasing more than 500 pages of documents about the incident, the department has remained mum since the May 10 briefing.

The raid netted drugs, large amounts of cash, bulletproof vests, about 30 cellphones and a stolen vehicle, records show, but no arrests have been made.

I really don’t know. If the police have break-throughs in cases, then the reporters/reporterettes take note. Otherwise, I guess they just go with the next shooting. It is noteworthy that that killing went off the radar screen. I do not remember the story at all from last year, but that was in the middle of baseball season for two of my children. I don’t watch television much at that time, so I guess that’s why I missed it. You would think the family would have made a lot of noise about it.

Now I'm going to pester you for documentation of that.

Here is the first article I found. No mention of drugs.

Double homicide: Manuel Francisco Orozco, 36; and wife Cynthia Orozco, 34

Second one. No mention of drugs.

Double murder takes parents of two young Tucson girls

I have gone through about 10 different articles on the double homicide, and no where is there any mention of ANYTHING illegal found in that home.

Thank you for adding some detail.

SPECULATION: The Guerena family was hitting up drug houses, and taking their cash, to run them out of business.

The Drug Dealers thought this was some local competition, so they went to the Orozco home and killed the husband and wife, also injuring a child. That was a warning.

One could assume that this didn't stop the Guerena's, but further angered them. So they did it again. Since they were only taking the MONEY, but not the drugs, this affected (supposition here) the cops who were taking bribes to protect/ignore the drug houses, so the Sheriff set up a bunch of rookies from the SWAT TEAM and told them (this part is a matter of record) that the Guerena's were the one's responsible for a recent home invasion/double homicide (however, the Sheriff didn't mention that the incident in question was the one involving the relatives of Guerena.)

Have you seen the movie, DRIVE ANGRY.

This reminds me of the scene with the Sheriff and the roadblock.

“When they get here, I want you to shoot their tires out. When I say shoot their tires out, what I mean is shoot them in the head. Now, shoot their tires out.”

Yes, I’ve looked at several articles (probably the same ones, but you have looked at more.) Same result.

Petitfour and I are both a little puzzled by how fast the Orozco murders went off the radar, and her point about the family / community not raising any fuss is noteworthy too.

I have an alternate speculation which involves less corruption but more incompetence, but haven’t had time to write it up yet. Either (yours or mine) would make for a pretty dramatic movie! :-)

One other question (I could probably go to Mapquest, etc., to get some idea, but it’s easier to ask you!):

Is there an open or low population density area along the road(s) between that mine that Jose Guerena worked at, and his home?

If you have seen the video of their entry I think you'll agree that they aren't trained well enough to handle a barking dog call.

I think I agree with that, without even having to see the video. From the accounts I've read, 30 seconds into the operation, they're all inside the house, and they've got one suspect down, they don't know if there are any other suspects in the house, and THEY'RE ALL HOLDING EMPTY WEAPONS.

Everything is pointing at the LEO organization as being the source of corruption.

Nobody of virtue in a position of authority would allow these events to occur, then treat it as “business as usual”. The streets would be more safe if all the LEOs involved in the situation were behind bars.

They have definitely destroyed faith, trust, and confidence in the offices they hold.

low population density between the mine and Jose Guerena’s neighborhood though there is a high traffic are part of the way. If he traveled the interstate, then it would be pretty sparse at 6:00am. Well, even the main road that leads to JG’s house is pretty much empty at 6:00am.

Jose had been making calls to the police about local drug houses and been ignored, investigated, and put on 'the list'.

I hadn't read that before. That could tie in with other statements about some Pima county sheriffs having been moles for the cartels.

That too struck me (though not exactly as funny) the first time I read the comment by the one SWAT team member to that effect (about shooting until he was empty). Then I read somewhere something to the effect that SWAT officers's are trained to empty their clips once they begin firing. I can hardly believe that, yet it seems to have happened...

The sad thing is, it's not any more foolish than having a standard policy (if THAT really is the case?) of sending in a SWAT team to execute search warrants whenever an occupant may be armed, regardless of their history. It'd sure be interesting to find vids or audio of Dept. spokesmen (Pima County or elsewhere) stating what exactly their policies in this area are. (I'd look, but my real job is calling loudly!)

Please be aware that I could not find a source for that, and that I believe I got it from the record of Jared Loughner’s complaints to Sheriff Dupnick, which I got mixed up with because of the link to Dupnick.

However, Some of his relatives and one of their children were killed in a home invasion, so I could speculate that he complained to them. Of course, without proof, it is just speculation.

The ‘truth’ probably lies in the middle between the Sheriff’s story, and our wildest speculation.

It does seem that the Sheriff set this up so that things could easily go bad.

If the Guerena’s et al had killed people during a home invasion, I could understand his warning to the SWAT TEAM about the raid. However, considering he told them the Guerena’s WERE involved in RECENT HOME INVASION with a DOUBLE HOMICIDE (which only matches up with the Orozco’s), then it seems like a setup.

Unless one believes the JOSE killed his own relatives.

There is still the remote possibility that we are way UNINFORMED and being MISLED by media reports, and that the Guerena’s were the BAD people the police claim, but I doubt it.
