Oh! Carol
~ Neil Sedaka ~
Sidenote: Working with his collaborator Howard Greenfield in 1958, Neil wrote this ode to his then-girlfriend, Carole Klein, later to become Carole King. In 1963, Carole King released a humorous answer to "Oh! Carol" entitled "Oh Neil".

What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For
~ Ray Peterson ~
Sidenote: This gem bubbled under the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks beginning in February of 1960, peaking at #104. It's notable because it was written in 1916 by Joseph McCarthy, Howard Johnson and James V. Monaco, making it one of the oldest rock'n'roll songs ever recorded. It was originally adapted to rock'n'roll in 1959 when a version, produced by Michael Barclay, became a number one hit for Emile Ford & The Checkmates in the UK.

I figured with the holiday, there would be plenty of patriotic songs from the other Dee Jays so to avoid steppen' all over each other, I made a left turn and went with truly American music. Most of these tunes fall between 1955 and 1965.Well, the truth of it is, that sort of list is what the troops were listening to on the radio, at USO's, Bob Hope's tours, and when 8 track tapes and cassettes came along carried them when they had down time. So our vets will more readily relate to them, just as every era has done.
What's been lost are the songs troops made up themselves. I had the good fortune to hear a few at a wedding feast that went on long into the nightwhen I was about 12 or so. Wish that there had been a way to record them, they were bawdy, funny, and melancholy at the same time.
