To be fair, he did not say “gay rights,” he said “rights for gays.” In fact, he said “rights for women, rights for gays.”
It may seem a small distinction, but it’s actually important.
In Muslim ruled countries, homosexuals have no rights at all and are often killed. If you take his words in context and by definition, it sounds like he was stating that homosexuals should have the same rights as everyone else.
This is a HUGE contrast to “gay rights,” which means changed “rights” based on homosexual preference, and includes “more rights” such as “homosexual marriage.”
It seemed like a calculated play to get the 1 or 2 homosexuals who may hear that and decide to support him without committing himself to extra “rights” for the homosexuals.
