Pakistan has asked China to build a naval base at its port of Gwadar, and wants the Chinese navy to maintain a regular presence there, Britains Financial Times reported Monday.
We have asked our Chinese brothers to please build a naval base at Gwadar, Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar, Pakistans defence minister, told the Times, confirming that the request was conveyed to China during a visit last week by Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.
Such a foothold would be the first overseas location offering support to Chinas navy for out-of-area missions, the Times wrote, and so would be likely to reinforce international concerns over Beijings longer-term military ambitions. Advertisement
In the past, China has shied away from military moves that might provoke the U.S. or its partners, such as India.
This will definitely be a game changer in Chinas defense and security relationships, said Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, a south Asia security expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The construction of a naval base in Gwadar would provide its own ships and possibly submarines with permanent basing rights, along with the possibility of regular patrols and exercises in the Arabian Sea to protect the growing number of Chinese-flagged oil tankers traversing the region to meet its increasing energy demands from the Gulf region.

The world is choosing sides, and no one wants the US on their team. We are not loyal to our friends, and we help our enemies.
Here you see the results of the great Obummer illegal war in Libya.
Lovely, congrats Obama you and you alone have totally screwed up foreign policy worst than Carter. A feat no one thought possible.
The world is going crazy and will not survive the next war and there will be one. The communists of the world are the enemy of Earth.
"We have asked our Chinese brothers to please build a naval base at Gwadar," Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar, Pakistan's defence minister, told the Times...India and Iran will sign broad military cooperation and trade agreements.
We have asked our Chinese brothers ...
The Chinese are their brothers?
Fallout from the OBL raid plus historic ties between the two. Oppressors tend to flock together.
You really think this is a result of just Obama in the last 2 yrs, and not something that has been building up for a longer time?
I think I will decline to comment on this one , it's too discouraging.
NOW can the US stop sending “aid” to Pakistan?
If the Pakistanies don’t like the US, does anyone really think they will love the Chinese on their soil? “Brothers”? Really? Good luck with that.
While the initial money pours in, things will be fine. After that...please. Might be fun to watch.
Pakistan wants Chinese Military Personnel to be New Easy Target of Taliban
1. Hainan Island - Lies astride of the Straits of Malacca, a narrow stretch through which something like 20% of all world trade must pass. The Chinese PLAN is to host somethink near 20 nuclear submarines inside the island, passing through large underwater tunnels bored through sheer granite (they are already made, and the base is already in there).
2. Gwadar - Lies astride the Persian Gulf.
THIS IS BAD MOJO.
We fly resupply aircraft over their country every day.
I'm thinking that Pakistan will be the next full member.
The SCO has a cool symbol:
Reminds me of Obama's little symbol. Coincidence, I'm sure.
LOL, did we not have navel facilities on the panama canal???? Who runs that place now????
This is really a massive strategic move on the part of Pakistan against the United States.
Guess what Obama’s response will be?
Give billions more to Pakistan.
Liberals always punish the good and reward evil.
