Apocalypse not now: The Rapture fails to materialise
The Guardian ^ | 05/21/2011 | David Batty

Christian doomsday prophet Harold Camping looks likely to be less than rapturous after his prediction that the world would end on Saturday failed to materialise.

The 89-year-old Californian preacher had prophesied that the Rapture would begin at 6pm in each of the world's time zones, with those "saved" by Jesus ascending to heaven and the non-believers being wiped out by an earthquake rolling from city to city across the planet.

But as the deadline for the Apocalpyse passed in the Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia, it became apparent that Camping's prediction of the end of the world was to end not with a bang but with a whimper.

Only on Twitter did the supposed armageddon sweep the world, with users expressing their mock disappointment at the lack of dead people rising from their graves.

New Zealander Daniel Boerman tweeted: "I'm from New Zealand, it is 6:06PM, the world has NOT ended. No earthquakes here, all waiting for the rapture can relax for now. #Rapture"

In Australia, Jon Gall of Melbourne was unimpressed by the lack of fire and brimstone. He tweeted: "#Rapture time here in Melbourne. A rather quiet sort of rapture if you ask me.

"Well we have had the #Rapture going for 50 minutes now. So far it hasn't interrupted my fish & chips and glass of stout."

In Brisbane, KillaJeules, was similarly disappointed by the lack of a Hollywood blockbuster ending: "So it's 6:37pm here in Brisbane, Australia. No earthquakes. No beaming up of Christians. No zombie apocalypse. No surprises haha."

Camping, a retired civil engineer, has built a multimillion-dollar, non-profit ministry based on his apocalyptic predictions. He previously predicted that the world would end in 1994.

The damage this Nut does to the message Christians are trying to get out to the unsaved is unmanageable. Using phrases like “The Bible Guarantees It”, only makes it harder for our missionaries and evangelist to discuss the Gospel with those who don’t know the Bible, particularly in foreign lands where much of his advertising was done.
And when discussing prophecy and end-time events with others we will be forever doing damage control, when they come back with “wasn’t that supposed to happen back in May of 2011?”
This is why Jesus gave a special warning in Mathew 24:11 “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.”

He supposedly took a couple verses and made it look real reasonable.

The Rapture HAS HAPPENED. We just don’t know it because all the people that were taken have been erased from our minds.

He previously predicted that the world would end in 1994.

The world actually ended in 2008.

The Rapture did not fail to materialize - it will materialize not at all, as it’s a phony invention of an American huckster.

No, not Huckleberry, err... Huckabee. Though I can see why you’d be confused between these particular con men.

It should go without saying, but the media was just bringing an undue amount of focus on this kook in an attempt to paint all Bible believers as such.

That's the real takeaway. Add the Campster to the Phelphsite freaks and Voila! Christianity for the sheeple's amusement and derision.

What a tool.

Guess I’m going to hell cause I’m still here.

That's what happened to me. I was visited last night by a bright beautiful light. An angelic figure emerged.

I CRIED OUT ... LORD! LORD! YOU HAVE COME FOR ME!

He spaketh, and I quote..."Don't get exited, you're not going anywhere. I'm here for the dog."

>>>Wait, does this go by Central Time or the 0 on the international date line?

THe way I understand it - it was supposed to start at 6PM in each time zone... so, there are plenty of time zones where it’s after 6pm, and nothing out of the ordinary seems to be happening.

“Do most Christians believe in the concept of Rapture? “
I’m not sure what percentage of Christians believe in the Rapture, but most do believe that there will be a literal tribulation period prior to, or before the physical return of Jesus. I say “prior to or before” because that is another argument among Christians nearly as divisive as the Rapture.

I do believe in the Rapture, mainly because the Tribulation period is seven years, and there is allot that needs to happen in just the first 3 ½ years of it. It would take Global Chaos for one man, the Antichrist to enter the Worlds stage and deceive nearly everyone LEFT on the planet, (all the peoples of the World in all religions) in such a short period of time.

The only type of “Global Disaster” I could think of on that scale would be for 200 or 300 million Christians to just vanish. And the whole point for the belief in the Rapture is we don’t believe Jesus meant for the Saved to have to suffer through the horrors that will happen to the planet during those seven years. And because he loves us so much and does not wish that any shall parish into eternal Hell, he knows it will take a great shake-up of those left to finally get them to listen. The “tough love” that so many of us fathers are familiar with. That we believe is the whole point of the Tribulation. Many will be saved during this time but they will be persecuted horribly, much like the first Church was, with public executions and torture, only to be ended with the physical return of Christ.

You really believe Camping's followers paid for 100 radio stations to air their claims 24/7? Who told you that, if I might ask?

Camping's Family Radio does have quite a few stations. And yes, they are spewing this nonsense. And sadly, he will make a bunch of dopey excuses and many of the gullible among us will still believe in him.

You can see the list of Family Radio's media outlets on wikipedia:

Sometimes we Calvinists find the dispensationalists rather entertaining, but this will paint all believers in the bad light. Predicting the date of the second coming is something those faithfully following scripture just don’t do regardless of eschatology. All doctrinally sound Christians agree Christ will have a second coming. Us adhering to covenant theology, believe when he comes, he comes and stays. No come down, rapture some and then return 7 years later. Any “meeting him in the air” is like the crowd going out to welcome their beloved victorious king home from battle. We’ll rush to meet him and escort him with praise into the gates of his earthly kingdom.

I was told by a Camping follower, that if we aren’t raptured today it means we aren’t true believers and Camping will still be correct. Now that is faith, but very misplaced faith. Camping will spiritually ship-wreck many today. This is evil disguised as light.

We should not ridicule or humiliate those that believed Camping, but pray for them and help them escape the grips of this false teacher (Jude 22 & 23), speaking graciously with love and concern. And for us that didn’t step into this snare, I think a reading of Romans 12:3 may be helpful.

Freepers, help me out here. Didn’t he predict the end of the world to occur later in the year and this would only be the rapture of true believers?

Peace all...

RE: The Word says no man knows the day or hour, not even the angels in Heaven know

Harold Camping knows this verse and explains it thusly :

http://www.familyradio.com/graphical/literature/nomanknows/nomanknows.html

_______________________________________________________________________

However, it was not until a very few years ago that the accurate knowledge of the entire timeline of history was revealed to true believers by God from the Bible. This timeline extends all the way to the end of time. During these past several years God has been revealing a great many truths, which have been completely hidden in the Bible until this time when we are so near the end of the world.

How can this be happening?

That this should happen was clearly prophesied in the Bible. The Bible is the living Word that requires the Holy Spirit to open the spiritual understanding of the person reading or hearing the words of the Bible. Therefore, since it was not God’s plan to open anyone’s understanding of many truths of the Bible until very near the time of the end of the world, it is only now that exceedingly important Biblical truths are being understood. The Bible tells us that this was going to happen.

The Bible says we will not know the hour....but we're to be ready ... ...I feel sorry for Camping spending all that money.....but he may have done some good... ..lots of folks might have had second thoughts about their souls and where they will spend eternity....if so, the money was well spent.... ..besides, it's not 6pm in America yet.....if God chose this day, it could yet happen.....at any second!

About the only thing sadder than this arrogant octogenarian false prophet are followers who blindly excuse his grevious errors. Are you seriously still entertaining the deluded hope that he could be right?

It is highly unlikely that Camping "may have done some good" and that "the money was well spent"... More likely, he has made Christians the laughing stock of the media and unbelievers by his false prophecy. The derision is multiplied by the fact that he tried the same stunt back in 1994.

Fool me once... fool me twice. Apparently his followers have not learned the truth of that simple aphorism.

Now we await the convoluted excuses from Camping as to how he was NOT wrong, and how everyone "misunderstood" what he was REALLY saying...

I believe in respecting ministers of the Gospel, but in this case the harm Mr. Camping has done far exceeds any good he may have accomplished in his ministry.

Years from now his legacy will be that of a failed prognosticator who squandered his ministry in the vain pursuit of his eccentric interpretations of biblical prophecy.
