When the country was first taken over by the English (1760s) they allowed people in Quebec to keep on speaking French eventhough the official language was now English

I was told that if the French Canadians sided with the British against the Americans during the war of 1812, they would be guaranteed their autonomy.

Canada paid dearly for that mistake!
