Why the hell we ever embraced Pakistan over the far more civilized Indians will always elude me.

I wish we would get back to national identity. This “NATO troops” stuff really annoys me. American troops, British troops, Australian troops, etc., signed up for their nation not a ‘treaty’ (IMO).
And let’s get back to identifying the enemy and killing the hell out of them (or blast em’ to hell, their choice).

India was somewhat loosely aligned with the Soviet Union, as I recall.
Having dangerous enemies can result in the selection of odd bedfellows. Just look at the USA and the Soviet Union in WWII.

Not to be paranoid but there are thousands upon thousands of Pakistanis living in the Vancouver, BC area only 50 miles from our northern border. Fully documented makes for easy entry.

That was part of The Evil Bush Doctrine. Under our new regime, it’s been changed to: “You are either with us, or we’ll apologize hoping that you decide to like us.”

If Bush were president, he would be getting savaged in the media right now because this was all provoked by his “cowboy” move of going in and killing Bin Laden without getting Pakistani approval.

That is precisely so. And given the Cold War reality of a true existential threat with 30,000+ nukes and an explicitly stated goal of world domination, we took allies wherever we could.

NATO troops = American soldiers.
The media just won’t tell the truth.
