Barack Obama's 'longest 40 minutes'
By: Carrie Budoff Brown May 8, 2011 07:58 PM EDT
President Obama described the daring nighttime raid on Osama bin Ladens Pakistani compound as one of the longest 40 minutes of my life, giving his first detailed account Sunday of the plot to capture the worlds most wanted terrorist.
The mood inside the Situation Room was very tense, and it only intensified when one of the helicopters went down early on in the operation, Obama said on CBSs 60 Minutes.
There were big chunks of time in which all we were doing was just waiting, Obama said. And it was the longest 40 minutes of my life with the possible exception of when [daughter] Sasha got meningitis when she was three months old and I was waiting for the doctor to tell me that she was all right.
Obama said he and his top aides, who were depicted in a powerful photo of the Situation Room, had a sense of when gunfire and explosions took place on the ground in Pakistan. But he said they could not get information clearly about what was happening inside the compound.
We also knew when one of the helicopters went down in a way that wasnt according to plan, Obama said. And, as you might imagine, that made us more tense.
Obama approved the operation without knowing definitively whether bin Laden was inside the compound, calling it a 55/45 situation. The first indication that the U.S. forces got bin Laden came when they reported back that Geronimo
has been killed, Obama said, using the code name for the terrorist.

Brilliant! Reminds me of my Sgt Pepper days!
No spiking the football here....nosiree Bob...that just ain’t who “we” are...
What is that on the back of his fingers on the left hand? It look like he has been burned?
Holy cow, never really noticed that - the thumb was the star of the show. Finger puppets?
His longest 40 minutes......our longest four years!
the story about sasha having meningitis has been debunked...did he forget???
Michelle said she didn’t have it.

In her speech, Mrs. Obama also told the story of how her daughter Sasha would not stop crying when she was 4 months old. A doctors visit revealed she might have meningitis; she ultimately did not, but the illness produced a scare.
Can someone tell me if a 3 month old baby is diagnosed with Meningitis..does the hospital let them out in 3 days?
like everything else he doesn’t have it right....jaundice maybe but not meningitis. BTW Obama looks like he has a seat on the toilet in that situation room....doesn’t look in control of anything with all that brass next to him.
I bet during that 40 minutes, President Urkel actually believed he was an alpha male.
Probably hasn’t had so much adrenaline flowing since he got between Michelle and the taco.
Intently watching a blank screen as the video transmission was taken down by the concrete building; hearing rounds fired, not seeing rounds fired; waiting for the Seals to advise Geronimo once they were safely back in the remaining helo; the "tense" situation room photo-op was a bunch of losers in a circle jerk, totally clueless as to what was going on within the compound.
What a POS. I sure hope that the truth about Panetta and the military actually staging a coup will get the light of day.
The first indication that the U.S. forces got bin Laden came when they reported back that Geronimo has been killed, Obama said, using the code name for the terrorist.
The use of the term “Geronimo” was what any person raised in America knows means that you got your guy. The announcement of the killing was E-KIA (Enemy Killed in Action).
After a week of complaints from Native Americans that Osama’s code name was Geronimo, 0’s quote tonight didn’t help.
