Israel on Tuesday congratulated America on finally catching up to and eliminating Al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, and noted that the targeted killing was very reminiscent of Israeli counter-terror operations for which Jerusalem is so often criticized.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement praising the determined American war on terror, and calling the successful assassination of bin Laden "a resounding victory for justice."
Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren said the White House phoned him two hours before US President Barack Obama's public announcement to let Israel know "we got him."
With all of the excitement in Washington over having successfully assassinated a terrorist leader like bin Laden, Israeli lawmaker Shaul Mofaz, head of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, suggested the US refrain from being hypocritical when Israel takes such action in the future.
Mofaz noted that the strategy of assassinating terrorist leaders had been first adopted by Israel following the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, in which nine Israeli athletes were abducted and executed by Palestinian terrorists.
Since then, Israel has repeatedly targeted and eliminated the heads of various Palestinian terror groups, including Hamas in Gaza. Each time, Israel has been harshly criticized by the international community, even its allies in Washington.
Israeli media outlets said that the way Obama chose to go after bin Laden validates Israel's policy of targeted killings, which Mofaz, a former IDF chief, wants to see more of.
While bin Laden was America's primary target in its war on terror, there was an Israel connection.
Over the past several years, bin Laden and his top deputies had made repeated references to the Palestinian Arabs, and had pledged their support to the goal of defeating Israel, along with America.

Then there are the rest of us.
Didn’t the Rats label Dubya a “cowboy” when he did things like the Osama operation?
As long as the USA generously supports Israel with taxpayer dollars, a little criticism is to be expected. I would hope that any American administration would be concerned with the use of US aid by any foreign government from Israel to Mexico to San Marino.
I can understand some aspects of this thought process. Everyone enjoys a dead enemy.
If it is found that orders were issued before action to kill this man, those in command chain must be tried before an impartial forum.
Control of power is a necessary thing. If they can issue orders to kill this pig, they can issue orders to kill you as well.
We do not commit premeditated homicide. We execute actions based on specific objective... Those who die in resistance to those objectives are incidental, expected casualties.
If we just use available mechanism to kill in premeditated manner we are no better than them.
We are better than that BTW... Just angry.
No blowback there.
My post was regarding chain of command and orders issued.

You're mischaracterizing the circumstances. bin Laden was at the very least in strategic command, likely in operational command of an organization, yes, a terrorist organization comprised of illegal combatants including himself, with which we were at war. He was a combatant, and could be killed on sight. As was Admiral Yamamoto. If the objective was to kill him, as we killed British officers during the revolution, so be it.
That doesn't mean the military can issue orders to kill you and me. Amongst the many problems I see in the reporting and discussion of this successful operation is the implication that somehow it was a domestic police operation. Which gives rise to the absurd references to assassination, it bothers me too. I could make a long list of enemy commanders over the centuries America would have loved to have killed had the opportunity presented itself. I'm glad we were successful this tim.

You give me a point of understanding of situation that I obviousy did not have in proper perspective.
For the time and knowledge you spent, I thank you.
Godspeed to you
