Just applying Occam’s Razor here (and believe me, I’d love to be proved wrong). It’s much easier to believe that a poor impression, along with scanning distortion makes “THE” look like “TXE” than the forger going through the effort to make a rubber stamp and then be sloppy enough to leave a typo in it. Or, if you believe the stamp was computer-generated, that the forger would take the time to make it look like an actual stamp impression and again be foiled by a sloppy typo.
