The Obama administration is drafting sanctions against Syrian government officials responsible for the escalating violence against protesters, the Wall Street Journal reported.
After weeks of treading lightly as it weighed its support for the protesters with a desire to engage with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the White House seems to have come down on the side of the swelling ranks of protesters. Obama condemned the brutality of Syrian security forces after more than 100 protesters were killed in Friday's protests alone, as the total death toll climbed above 300 this weekend.
The sanctions would freeze senior government officials' assets in the US and prevent them from doing business with US companies. US sanctions alone wouldn't have much of an impact on the Assad regime, which has few holdings in the US, but they will be significant if European countries follow suit since President Assad and other officials are believed to have much larger holdings in Europe, according to the Journal.
The latest move toward sanctions, which appears similar to the tactic the US used against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi after his crackdown, would come as international opinion turns against the Syrian regime

They’re not “protestors.” They’re Iran backed jihadists. And we’ll soon be fighting FOR them under obastard in Syria, too, just like we are in Libya...
Sanctions against Syria? Gee, what a novel idea. Why haven’t we thought about that before?
It will never happen the Israeli lobby will never go for that.
We can’t solve the mess in a much weaker Libya, nor should we. No way should we get involved in Syria. The mudslimes can kill each other without our help.
Obama had no vote on this because his Senate career didn't go back that far.
Ooooh, sanctions.
Why don’t they just write them a strongly-worded letter.
The way leftwing socialists spin and rebrand reminds me of the classic Monty Python “parrot” sketch.
“He’s not dead...he’s sleeping.”
Once again we’re seeing what a pathetic amateur Hussein is in dealing with these situations. Having him at the negotiating table is like throwing gasoline on a bonfire.
Wrong. Syria is a client state of Iran and if anything Iran would be supplying troops to help prop up the regime.
The Zero will jump into a fourth war.
Peace Prize his ass!
“Wrong. Syria is a client state of Iran and if anything Iran would be supplying troops to help prop up the regime.”
You know, I do believe you are correct. Maybe this is an internal fight between factions in Iran? A proxy fight between Saudi Arabia and Iran? I recall Christians are being targetted by the “protestors,” so muslim vs muslim of one form or another is going on here.
I just find it hard to believe this is a true Western style democracy movement...
We should have dumped sanctions on them years ago. Syria is no friend of America or civilization in general.
Goodbye “piss process” and good riddance.
I don’t believe that they are “Iran backed jihadists” since Assad works for Iran. These really may be people who are sick of the brute Assad.
Don’t we need to bomb? Don’t we bomb first and support al queda infested mobs later? Egypt is total muslim brotherhood. They are killing and detaining Coptic Christians as fast as they can. They immediately released all al queda leaders. Lets bomb Yemen and them Ivory Coast. That has to be in our “best interest”.

Seems like every Democrat president that follows a Republican one likes to have some sort of military engagement in some part of the world that isn’t a big US security concern ...that involves little more than bombing the hell out of the place.
Yeah I don’t know what to think. From 03 to 09 all I heard was how Syria was a threat to Syria and a puppet for Iran and needed to be overthrown. Now all I hear is that it’s actually a sanctuary for Christians now and any attempt to overthrow its government will help the terrorists.
