BUFFALO, N.Y. Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of "pedophile!" and "pornographer!" stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn't need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents.
That new wireless router. He'd gotten fed up trying to set a password. Someone must have used his Internet connection, he thought.
"We know who you are! You downloaded thousands of images at 11:30 last night," the man's lawyer, Barry Covert, recounted the agents saying. They referred to a screen name, "Doldrum."
"No, I didn't," he insisted. "Somebody else could have but I didn't do anything like that."
"You're a creep ... just admit it," they said.
Law enforcement officials say the case is a cautionary tale. Their advice: Password-protect your wireless router.

Gestapo tactics? Good Lord.
Your idiocy is simply breathtaking. You're comparing what they did to people who escorted Jewish children to the gas-chambers.
Unbelievable. You should familiarize yourself with the phrase, "Godwin's law".
I agree that’s how it does go, but that’s not right. I can’t believe you are supporting these gestapo tactics. What next you’ll teach us the virtues of the SS and concentration camps?
fact is the police (or to be specific federal agents) didn’t do their homework BEFORE invading this house. And it’s a shame the judge didn’t see this obvious error either (or the police/prosecutor lied in their request—wouldn’t be the first time that happened). Besides what’s the big deal...they were so sure this guy was guilty why do all the prelim work and just cut to the chase?
So they cut some corners and invade someone’s house. All the while some American’s are perfectly fine with this because a judge said it was ok.
Clearly this guy is going to sue...otherwise why would he have an attorney?
Sure, because hunting down pedophiles is just like murdering Jews, or something.
That's a very strange world you inhabit.
"fact is the police (or to be specific federal agents) didnt do their homework BEFORE invading this house. "
Really, then it was another man's internet connection that was being used? Nope, I think it was his.
"Clearly this guy is going to sue...otherwise why would he have an attorney?"
Yes, I get it. You think the guy is going to sue. Once again, please let us all know how it turns out.
Yep, I can read. What you allege is that the tactics of the federal agents are like the tactics of the Gestapo.
That is an absurd argument, if there ever was one.
How many Jewish kids do you think these feds murdered this week?
The only difference her is that the "suspect" in question didn't go to a gas chamber, the excuse to enter his house is different how?
Made up charges, persecution for what crime?
One that didn't exist, yet you support the entrance under the color of law using your "solid" evidence rule?
And you call me idiotic?
I say you're a commie loveing troll jerk off.
Uh, yeah...inconclusive evidence fits pretty well.
What you cannot see is your "solid" evidence is nothing but bullsh!t...sound familiar?
Ok, so I see so if someone is accused of being a pedophile...let's hunt them down and kill them and screw their rights.
Other than that do you follow the constitution?
So why not do the same thing to every ISP and internet router that hosted the connections? Why not go in with guns drawn at the ISP? I guess businesses have more rights in your America then people do.
Why do you think he got an attorney? Do you think he just likes throwing away money?
I can see seven networks plus mine right now. Six are named and two are linksys, including the only unsecured network of the bunch.
ICE has approx. 26 SAC —Special Agent in Charge Offices (Field Offices) in the US. Most have SRTs-Special Response Teams.
However, article States Agents were wearing “jackets.” This implies a non-SRT raid. The jacket covers the agents body armor but neither imply “SWAT” or SRT.
The media oft times applies the word SWAT to all such raids, erroneously. Very confusing to the citizenry/readers.
FBI-HRT-Hostage Rescue Team. US Marshal Service-SOG-Special Operations Group. Missouri Highway Patrol-SWAT. Some local PDs-CRT-Crisis Action Team.
Merely pointing out the confusion that can and does occur among the populace. This needs to be rectified.
Most everyone knows what it means when someone yells FBI! Or wears a jacket with FBI on it. But what the hell does ICE! mean to the common folk? New term to most. Yell ICE! down here in the Ozarks and most people would direct you to the nearest convenience store.
By ODH’s reasoning the cops could have gone in guns drawn at every ISP that hosted the connection. Grabbed the log files and then went to the next stop.
But for some reason they didn’t. I wonder why?
Why would that matter to you, you would defend them no matter what.
You would seek some argument that the Constitution didn't specifically say they couldn't so dirt bags like you could find the loop holes and find ways to abuse fellow Citizens.
Shakespeare was right.
ODH is a troll. I used to get into it with him pretty heavily on the eligibility threads but otherwise he is a fairly sensible poster.....establishing cover I suppose.
My patience is running thin, I'm going to exit this thread, it is Easter after all...I hope yours is a Happy one!
I think they identify themselves as 'Federal Agents.'
Would help if SSID broadcast was turned off but that might be asking a bit much.....
Last sentence was meant to be humorous, but I failed to identify it as such...
Disabling SSID broadcast, MAC address ACLS, and WEP are easily defeated and even WPA2 with enough effort can be cracked. Wireless networking is inherently unsecure.
Many years ago I worked at JFK Airport. One night a guy approached me while quickly flipping a badge and saying, "Federal Agent." He wanted to search my carry-on bag so I handed it to him. I spotted his partner standing back in the dark which made that guy stiffen a bit. There was nothing in my bag but a dirty work uniform so the agent gave it back and walked off. I have no idea what agency he worked for or why he tagged me. Maybe they just do training exercises.
A meaningless story but I felt like telling it. :-)
