The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.
A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.
During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."
He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.
But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.
Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.
The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.
Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.
Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.
But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

The USSC has long held that if the government believes that a person’s speech will endanger public safety because of those who won’t like it, the government must supply sufficient police and/or military power to suppress the possibility of public danger and allow the speech to continue. If sufficiently dangerous conditions arise, our total military force must be applied to those who would prevent free speech to suppress them.
Westboro won their case as well they should have. But in winning their case they lost what they were seeking. The goal of the Westboro church was to lose the case, then the left could go after conservatives over any speech that they didn’t like or were offended by. Have you noticed that the left never attacks the Westboro church, ever. Gay groups never say anything about the Westboro church. Why do you think that is?
Back in the day the American NAZI Party had a parade in the area of a city that was mostly Jewish. The USSC ruled in favor of the NAZI Party to hold the parade.
The Jews did not have to become violent, and the Muslims do not need to become violent.
So, now accordng to you, if someone doesn’t like what I say and says they will become violent then I don’t get to say it.

Actually (unlike liberals who like to push the envelope with the US Constititution) I had never heard this pastor mention his rights or the Constitution in interviews I have heard. I believe this man really believes in what he does and is not a goal of his to incite violence or take advantage of the Constitution.
When I heard Sean Hannity scolding him on his radio show I thought sure at some point the Pastor was going to come out and start talking about his rights and the Constitution, but he never went there in the discussion.

Absolutely! The commander of the troops was General Edward Walker, later of the John Birch Society. If a government in the US attempts to suppress free speech it subjects itself to military occupation.
We have fought wars to protect The Constitution.
Someone needs to tell the Mohammedans that in America burning the Koran is legal.

I suggest art, which duplicates that “Piss Christ” art. In other words, take those exact artworks that desecrate Christianity, but replace the cross, or the jesus figure, with a koran or mohammed. Immersed in urine.

YOU do not have a sidewalk. The public has a sidewalk, and Jones is a member of the public. Naturally he can’t obstruct other members of the public.
