The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.
A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.
During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."
He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.
But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.
Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.
The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.
Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.
Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.
But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

This is one of the most outrageous incursions on the unalienable rights of Americans yet.
What is Oqaeda? Al Queda? A play on Obama?
It's "free speech".
Get with the program.
A couple days ago, some (dirty) moslems in Afghanistan were beaten/jailed for recycling old korans into pulp, then into toilet paper.
I said, “Hell, I skip that middle step.”
I just rip, and wipe.
In the light of the case of the American Nazi Party being allowed to demonstrate in the highly Jewish city of Skokie, IL, I can’t imagine that this case will survive appeal. Skokie’s reasoning was identical to this case, and the USSC threw it out.

“What is Oqaeda? Al Queda? A play on Obama?”
Oqaeda is 0bama.
Also known as Ohole, Oherpes, Osphincter.
Who needs Al Qaeda when we’ve got Omoslem?
Well who made you the all-seeing arbiter of what serves a purpose and what doesn't?
Actually, he doesn’t have a right to protest anywhere he pleases, but he does have the right to assembly.
Not if it endangers the public, get a grip.
This assclown lost this round, rightfully.
And he’ll be back next week on the Dearborn city hall steps it is said and there he can have his *free speech.*
This guy is a deranged FREAK trying to stir up crap in a place it is not needed, like a neighborhood where a *protest* could not be serviced by emergency vehicles and so forth.
This is why this nutcase was denied a permit.
If you want to align yourself with a Westboro equivalent, knock yourself out.
Hey, those guys are associates. Maybe he can get them to join him in a protest...Now that would serve a purpose.
This all leads back to the Birth Certificate, people.
I'm not one who implies Obama was born outside the US. But I do imply that he's been refusing to release his records to nullify the US Constitution. He did the same with how Obama-Care was shoved down our throats, he did the same when he made a formal complaint against the State Of Arizona to the United Nations and he ignored Congress and consulted the United Nations when taking us to war with Libya. It's a slippery slope.
Now we should be very careful what we post on the internet. If they feel that our freedom of speech could lead to violence (not in our own city) but in some village on the other side of the world we could be hearing a knock on our doors by the Feds.
I suppose in Obama's next term it will be guns that will be banned next.
To be selective on what's important and what's not so important in the US Constitution is a very dangerous choice and slippery slope.
That was then. This is now. Times have changed. Black is white. Up is down. If it was against Christians or the funeral of a member of the Armed Forces, he would have been allowed to hold his protest. But it wasn’t, so he is in the pokey. And if you review the koran burning threads, you will find that more that a few on this forum are rejoicing at where he is.
Almost every word you said about Jones is true, and every objectionable thing he has said and done are his Constitutional right. The jailing of a citizen for exercising his constitutional rights is anathema in a Free Republic.
Found Korans for $13.00 apiece on Amazon. Have been thinking of getting few and doing some creative destruction with videos.
“Have you killed a Koran Day?”
This is a serious felony.
TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 13 > § 242

Let’s see, how does that quote go, “First they came for....”
It is still imprisonment.
‘If you want to align yourself with a Westboro equivalent, knock yourself out.’
You are associating yourself with Bull Connor and every racist city which jailed civil rights demonstrators, not in your motivation, but in your methods.
