Pastor Terry Jones imprisoned to prevent Detroit Koran protest
The Telegraph ^ | 4/23/2011

The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.

A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.

During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."

He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.

But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.

Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.

The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.

Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.

Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.

But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

From what I recall, they both marched/protested against homosexuality. The Jones group posted a notice on their website advising that Jones’ group does not see eye to eye with all of the Westboro loons stances. Many on FR are opposed to homosexuality. Therefore, many on FR are in agreement with both Jones’ group and the Westboro loons.

Both groups are opposed to abortion, as well. Again, many on FR are opposed to abortion.

Even loons can be right some of the time.

“Gen. Petraeus warned that if Pastor Jones burned the Korans publicly, he was putting American troops in danger and harming the war effort. Pastor Jones didn’t care about American troops. Why do you care about him?”

American troops, serving in a war zone, are already in danger. Surely this has not escaped your attention?

We are at war against “some muslims.” Some like minded muslims are here on our soil. Reverend Jones, like the rest of us, enjoys the right to freedom of speech. Well, except in Dearborn, Mi., where Islam already rules.

I care about the right of Reverend Jones to enjoy his right to freedom of speech. How would you like your freedom of speech to be denied?

Can freedom of speech be abused? Sure it can. We know it is. But we can’t limit those with whom we disagree, without compromising our own. I get it. Do you?

Muslim has gotten a strong toe hold in may countries in Europe. It is just a matter of decades that these countries fall to sword of the cresent.

As Muslims look at placement of Mosques as conquest, I can see our fate as the same. As another poster mentioned..... How many christian churches do you see in Moslem run countires.........ABSOLUTELY ZERO!!!!

Yes, and because of the locale he was trying to do it on Easter Sunday! But failed.

Maybe one of the FR Menza spectaculars here that call me a Hitler Nazi might get a grip on reality.

It’s Easter Sunday, and some asshole from another state is trying to pick a religious fight where it has no relevance and dragging down people that might have a peaceful diety in mind.

Our former Commander in Chief insisted, and our current Commander in Chief insists that we are not at war with Islam.

I think the more pertinent question might be whether or not Islam is at war with us.

On that front, I think some Islamists, but not all, are at war with us in the name of their religion, but some are also at war with each other, which is why there has been such turmoil between Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq.

Just as we have differences between Catholics and Pentacostals, Episcopalians and Jehovah’s Witnesses, I don’t think all Muslims together, any more than you can lump all Christians together.

What is the purpose of folks being bussed into DC from NYC to protest any number of issues? I suppose Jones went where the effect of the protest would be greatest. If the muslims are incapable of restraint when faced with a protest of something near and dear to them, perhaps they’d best leave the country as soon as possible, since their appetites for animated debate and political discourse are inconsistent with the foundations of this country.

As immigrants to a free nation, it is incumbent upon them to adhere to our standards, not we to adhere to theirs.

If the muslims feel the need to act like animals and slaughter at the first perceived provocation, it would be best they emigrate to a backwards muslim cesspool somewhere else. They either melt into the American pot or leave. No one is entitled to “special privileges” or considerations. We’re all equal, under the law.

Or, we’re supposed to be.

Well, if you really want to make a difference, why don't you go burn Korans in Mecca? Why doesn't Pastor Jones burn Korans in Iraq and Afghanistan?

What purpose does burning Korans in Florida or Michigan serve?

I’m glad this deranged sack of crap is out of my state. We all know a significant percentage of muzzies like killin’ in a bloodsport around the world for as many centuries as this cult is old, to this day. Nothing good can come from this. He does not represent today’s Christianity and does a disservice to all those of any (almost) faith.

you have so much to learn and so little time to do it. You have no concept of what true freedom is, none at all... Because someones actions offend you...as long as they don't threaten you, shut up...they have the same rights as you do to expres their inane opinions. Freedom is not free...you have to put up with a lot to insure that everyone has freedom....that's why it usually works here and seldom works anywhere else!!! The deranged sack of crap that you wanted out of your state.....he'll be replaced with another sooner or later....live with it....you may not be attractive to him either He is scum. A provocateur. We all understand the 1st Amendment and don’t need this asshole out there to remind us, JMO. And this jackass is coming back week to stir up tro

Unfortunately, if Pastor Jones sparked riots in Detroit, Christians, Whites, and heterosexuals would probably have been the targets of the violence. You'd like that, apparently.

Have the Muslims actually made such a terrorist threat? If so, you advocate submission to terrorists. If the threat is only implied, your position amounts to the same thing. The double standard you advocate objectively make Christians into second-class citizens. You'd like that, apparently.

I see detroit/dearborn getting sued big time...on another earlier post, the guy that burn pages of the koran at ground zero (where the mosque is suppose to be built) just won a big law suit for false arrest and stopping his freedom of speech (he was fired from his city job) and has to be reinstated with back pay plus 25000.00 dollars. For once I agree with the ACLU. They are the ones that took his case...It has taken 2 years to finally end this case..

It reminds me of the time the KKK marched in my hometown. No one wanted them there, and everyone was pretty embarrassed by it all and many were a little frightened that it would get out of hand and there would be violence, but they applied for a parade permit all legal-like, and the sheriff said there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Or like when Jesse Jackson comes in and tries to rile people up.

I just really don’t like out of town folks coming in trying to start trouble.

No disagreement overall.

But you have saddled yourself with all the other minions on this thread ranting about the 1st Amend.

Why has no one spoken of Obamacare if there are so many geniuses on this thread?

It cannot be reconciled.

This is a local battle for better or worse.

In a state that went TOTALLY red, redder than Texas if you look into the math.

Stupid people are stupid people.

We are not a country run through the top-down, but rather a country from grass-roots and if you want to go to the hammer in tea party territory I have nothing but time.

The difference is that Jones would be assured of death in Mecca or some other backwards muslim infested country.

At least here he can openly claim to be Christian and let be known his intention to protest. Over there, he’d have no right to protest anything. He’d probably have been killed for some other reason already.

Well, you’ve figured out why some people have less free speech than others. Obviously they don’t riot enough.
