Pastor Terry Jones imprisoned to prevent Detroit Koran protest
The Telegraph ^ | 4/23/2011

The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.

A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.

During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."

He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.

But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.

Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.

The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.

Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.

Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.

But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

They violated his civil rights when they jailed him.

If Rev. Sharpton or Rev. Jackson were denied free speech, their followers would riot in the streets. We’ve seen it before.

Gen. Petraeus warned that if Pastor Jones burned the Korans publicly, he was putting American troops in danger and harming the war effort. Pastor Jones didn’t care about American troops. Why do you care about him?

I have no friends that are terrorists, sorry.

And if you think I belong at DU, go through my last 5,000 posts and shut up.

In all fairness, this is true and correct.

Finally, a sane mind and comment in this debate.

This is a double standard. Free speech is only permitted against Christians, Whites, and heterosexuals.

Unfortunately, if Pastor Jones sparked riots in Detroit, Christians, Whites, and heterosexuals would probably have been the targets of the violence. You'd like that, apparently.

On 9-11 the area of Chicago known as West Rogers Park,
was filled with Paki’s and Muslims cheering in the street
Devon Ave by California and Western Ave looked like a
pro Islamic fascist rally.

That was never reported. No arrest for inciting a riot.

The liberals called that freedom of speech. We saw it as the fifth column termites out from under the rot.

As far as I am concerned the Muslim religion re-declared war on us on 11 Sep 2011. While this guy is radical, any placating of our side only emboldens these miscreants even more.

I agree that he should use a different way to fight this battle, but I will grant him that I agree that Muslims want to destroy us.

Not so sure about that anymore.

Thumper, the pastor had not YET burned anything, and no violence had YET taken place.

If violence “erupted”, the fault would be with the violent person. Since when does any citizen just have the right to go off on another one?

But I think your post was tongue-in-cheek, was it not?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past, ohhh....1,300 years, “infidels” have been under constant threat from muslims...and Americans of all form, troops included, do not need to have a Jones figure do anything to put them under threats from muslims.

Our troops have been targeted and killed long before Jones popped up with his street theater.

Don’t play that game, it doesn’t fly.

It is my understanding that the Muzzie’s consider Dearborn a foothold for further conquest. As loony as this minister may appear, we may be singing a different tune down the road.

“Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents”

Isn’t this a bit backwards? Shouldn’t they arrest the ones making the threats of violence and death, not the one who is seeking his Constitutional right to protest?

Totally agree with your general statement 100%.

My argument is not Constitutional, Bill of Rights, any of that...

But (hate to be rude) THE RIGHT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT IT’S CITIZENS.

Is this not the root of a representative republic?

Hello.

Is not this why why are all here?

Your statement is true, but it is ironic in that Terry Jone’s Dove Outreach Center actually supported and marched with the Westboro psuedo-baptist loons.

Tell me, what is the purpose of Jones’ “street theater” other than to incite?

I think he was arrested for the wrong reason, but he had no more business being in Dearborn than the Westboro people have being at the funerals of dead soldiers.

Somebody else should burn it in his absence. If I were in Michigan I would do it but I vowed not to visit any more turd world holes.

"It’s provocative and unnecessary serving no purpose."

I'll have to strongly disagree with you there.
He has brought the unacceptable hypocrisy to the surface, right in everyones faces in an undeniable fashion. He has exposed the liberal establishment for what it is: biased against one, favoring another. Forget about his cackling regarding i slam and the koran, you don't have to agree with his methods. What you cannot deny is the side-effects. The public now asks of itself: what if I am next? What if the jack-boots disagree with ME?

I don't care much for troublemakers, just like you. BUT the minute we start justifying the squelching of voices in the name of peace and correctness, we cease to be America.
Some heads need to roll over this, IMHO
