The US pastor whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly violence in Afghanistan was briefly jailed in a heavily Islamic suburb on Friday after a court banned his protest outside a mosque.
A local judge jailed Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida and his associate Wayne Sapp after a court found their planned protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, could lead to violence.
During his court appearance, Pastor Jones argued that the Koran "promotes terrorist activities around the world."
He also insisted that his right to protest against Islam was protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
"The First Amendment does us no good if it confines us to saying what is popular," he pointed out.
But Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad testified that his department had received information about serious threats made against Pastor Jones from local residents, and argued that his protest could lead to violence if allowed.
Prosecutor Robert Moran argued that the protest had nothing to do with the First Amendment and at stake were security and peace in the community.
The jury sided with the prosecution and Judge Mark Somers set bond at the symbolic amount of $1 each for the two pastors, which they initially refused to pay.
Following their refusal, both were escorted to a local jail. But local media reported both men changed their minds after spending about an hour behind bars and posted the $1 bond.
Under the judge's ruling, both Pastor Jones and Mr Sapp are now prohibited by the court from going to the mosque for three years.
But Pastor Jones was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying the two "will come back next week" to try to organise a new protest.

So in a nutshell what you are saying is the Muslims have taken over your neighborhood and you are scared to death of them.
It must be an awful way to live one’s life.
I appreciate the clever sarcasm, but that nitwit comment sides you with Obama bombing Libya.
And Assad, lots of dead bodies the last couple of days.
Thankfully, civil, public peace was found in Dearborn this Easter weekend, and for now this drama has a happy ending.
It’s about you submitting to islam, already.
The wants and needs of the muslims do not supersede the US Constitution. Just as I cannot put a round between the eyes of Bill Ayers for burning and trampling Old Glory, neither can the muslims do violence to Jones for burning their precious rag.
Their “sensibilities” be damned. We do not live under shari’a law and we are not bound by the dictates of imams and semi literate mullahs regarding what levels of esteem any given faith or belief structure are to be given.
Should feral muslims decide to act like rabid animals, they should be treated as such and taken care of when they froth at the mouth and go berserk when disturbed.
When the first Church of Christ is built in Mecca or Riyahd, I’ll give a damn what feelings of muslims are hurt in any given situation.
My apologies.....AR is correct.
smartarse comment notsithstanding.
Be glad I am not a muslim and felt insulted by your comment. If I were, you’d be getting a late night knock on your door from the 0bamaoist Gestapo and certain posters on this thread hauling your rear-end away for inciting violence.
Prima facie evidence that Islam is a cult of violence that the authorities are afraid of.
If there was a protest by Muslims in front of a Catholic Church, would the DA and police chief give a fig?
If Jones had burned the muslim rag and violence erupted, it’d have been his fault for provoking them.
If the muslims were attacked for attacking Jones, their “civil rights” would have been violated and hate crimes charges would have been filed.
Isn’t that easy to comprehend?
So, what this tells me is that the next time this so called church protests at a soldiers funeral they should be beaten down by an overwelming mob of ax handle wielding US citizens.
Why? Are you going to sic your little terrorist friends on him?
I think you belong somewhere else. I’m sure you’d fit in nicely at DU.
The Westboro Baptist people are totally offensive. So is burning the holy book of any religion, as Terry Jones does. The insult here is that the courts for whatever reason have so far allowed the Westboro shenanigans to continue, but two wrongs don't make a right.
Merely another incremental step toward Islamization of the USA. When Islam rules, free speech is suppressed. From where I sit, Islam is already ruling America.
Imagine a jury that would deny free speech. They did in Dearborn, for Reverend Jones. What kind of jury would do that? A jury not familiar with the Constitutional right of free speech? Or was it a jury composed of blacks and muslims, or a combination of both?
Imagine Reverend Al Sharpton, or Reverend Jesse Jackson, being denied free speech. Imagine a prosecutor taking them to court in order to deny them free speech. Imagine a jury ruling with the prosecutor, placing them in jail, simply to deny them their right of free speech.
There are two major problems for Reverend Jones. 1. He is white. 2. He waded into the territory of (Dearborn), where Islam rules.
Free speech denied. Lily white, and an infidel to boot! Pack your bags Reverend Jones, exit the war zone. Regroup. Stage right! Live to fight another day.
As far as a late night knock on the door by the Obammunist-Moose Limb Gestapo goes, all I can say is thank God I live in Boise. We don't look too kindly on that kind of nonsense. In order to get to my door, they'd have to fight their way through my neighbors, and if they want to get to my neighbor's door, they'd have to get past me.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
LOL
No worries.
There, I fixed it.
So which part of that message do you disagree with? I think the guy's over the top too, but after 9-11, how many of the so called moderate muslims came to our defense?
Oh, so you are native and know the area?
Nice. Next time say so as not to make yourself a fool. I don’t know you from the FR state board, and your home page does not reflect you even have a state, no problem. At least there is a baseline from your comment.
Yes, it was not nice when the Dearborn cops last year muzzled those three kiddos pushing paper street pamphlets during a muzzie activity.
What we have here is not a typical FR nonsense Constitutional argument, but where local government steps in as not to get innocents killed that don’t deserve to die that day.
It’s not complicated.
And for those that prefer state’s right’s, a representative republic vs. a demcracy at large ought to think about it.
This is a double standard. Free speech is only permitted against Christians, Whites, and heterosexuals.
