BHO, Sr was not a typical American black. Nor was Hawaii a typical American state with respect to race relations in 1961. BHO, Sr was in fact a minor local celebrity because of his novelty. His graduation from UH merited its own article in the Honolulu Advertiser:

I have no trouble believing he could have been listed as African on the original long form.
