Hoekstra: Don’t Underestimate Trump—His Straight Talk Has Captured Voters
Newsmax ^ | April 20, 2011 | Jim Meyers

Posted on 04/20/2011 5:28:36 PM PDT by RobinMasters

Republican Pete Hoekstra, who served 18 years in the U.S. House, tells Newsmax that Donald Trump is the only potential GOP presidential candidate who has “captured the imagination” and says a Trump candidacy could “resonate very, very well” with the voters in 2012.

The veteran lawmaker, who was the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, also asserts it is just a matter of time before Islamic extremists attempt another attack in the U.S., charges that the Obama administration’s policy on oil drilling must share the blame for soaring gasoline prices, and says the country can’t survive another four years of Obama’s “failed leadership.”

Hoekstra was first elected to represent Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District in 1992. He did not run for re-election in 2010 and instead mounted an unsuccessful campaign for governor in Michigan. But he says he may run for the U.S. Senate in the future.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, Hoekstra was asked to assess the potential Republican candidates for president in 2012.

“I think there’s a lot of candidates out there. No one’s clearly captured the imagination of the field right now except perhaps Donald Trump,” he responds.

Trump is not a conservative, but we enjoy him wailing on Obama.

The MSM puts Trump on the TV. If someone else who was saying the same stuff on TV, they wouldn’t put him or her on TV.

Trump became famous about 25 years ago, and has 25 years of public comments that reveal him as not a Conservative.

This is a case of the MSM picking our candidates for us.

Any one of us here on FR could make a good case for why Obama is bad. And, because we’re not politicians, and because we have no realistic chance of winning, we can go up there and provide only red meat.

I think Trump should call Obama the devil. Trump: “Obama Is The Devil”. We’d love it. And then, after Trump calls Obama the devil, news reporters would ask the serious candidates whether they, too, would like to call Obama “The Devil”. And people like Bachmann would say “I don’t know if I’d call Obama “The Devil” exactly”.

And then some of us will say “I’m not voting for this person with a good track record of being a Conservative Politician, because the possibly Liberal Real Estate Developer who the Liberal MSM is putting on TV all the time is really tearing into Obama, who does in fact really suck at least as bad as Trump says he does.”

What about Herman Cain? Some people here seem to like him, and he is apparently a good Conservative. Can he start saying exactly what Trump is saying? And if he did, would the MSM give him the same amount of TV coverage as they do Trump?

I like hearing what Trump is saying, but I’d prefer that a Conservative say it.

All Trump has done is to do is take a pro American stance and hit Obummer unmercifully.

And the GOP and Media haven't.

That makes Trump the leader of the pack.

I like much of what Trump is saying as well. I just doubt that he believes it and that makes all the difference in the world to me.

Thanks RobinMasters.

Would it surprise anyone that Hoekstra wants a role in the next administration?

Hey Pete. Many candidates have given us straight talk. Once they become elected their talk turns crooked, convoluted, twisted. Do you have any straight talk, Pete?

Trump has been famous for close to 30 years now. I didn’t really ever get the feeling (I guess until right just now) that he was conservative. Someone said he was pro Hillary.
If Obama is the nominee in 2012, that means Hillary isn’t.
If Hillary wants to be the nominee, Obama would have to be knocked out somehow. If Obama was knocked out somehow, blacks would likely to be very very pissed off at whoever is seen to be doing that. And who is bringing this up is “Republican” Donald Trump. The gays (who are basically Hillary supporters) brought Trump to CPAC and somehow he got up there on stage as a Conservative. If it’s Donald Trump - Hillary supporter on TV tearing down Obama, it would be the blacks against Hillary. But we have to embrace Trump apparently.

I wouldn’t say that for sure. It’s possible that Trump would take more from Obama than he would from Palin. Anderson took 10% from Carter in the Philly Suburbs in 1980. Reagan won PA in 1980, Ford lost PA in 1976. I’m not saying that would be the outcome, just that the opposite is not certain.

I don't. When I've got FReepers invoking God to damn me for speaking the truth about that bottom feeder, we've gone off the rails.

I’m no Donald Trump. However, I like him a lot because he reminds me of me.

I couldn't agree more. All Trump has done is to do is take a pro American stance and hit Obummer unmercifully. We have had a 2 year drought of this. People are dying to hear it again. Maybe the RNC dopes and the potential candidates might take note.

I agree also.
