Even on his days off from working overnights for the Chicago police, John Lewison usually stayed up through the night and slept during the day.
It was often early in the morning, after having his fill of CNN, that he turned to a hobby of sorts. Sprawled on a couch in his North Side home in a T-shirt and sweatpants, Lewison tried to unravel a murder mystery that has mystified law enforcement and crime buffs for decades: the identity of the Zodiac killer, who is believed responsible for at least five homicides that terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s.
Lewison, who has risen to lieutenant in nearly 25 years with the department, thinks hes come up with a solution to one of a series of coded messages the serial killer sent along with taunting letters to the news media. The cryptograms, composed of alphabetic, mathematical and astrological symbols, are thought likely to contain vital information about the suspect.

I've always been curious about the code and I suppose there are other FReepers who are curious as well.

I wonder if this man from Chicago figured out that “Hope and Change” means “Scew the USA”.

It would be great if he could crack the code, but there is no guarantee that if he did, and it lead to the killer, that the police would find that the guy is not already pushing up daisies, after all the murders happened over 40 years ago. I guess it would give the victim's families some peace, but there would be no earthly (at least) justice for their loved ones.

All of the letters have been cracked except for one. The others were cracked by a couple who gave the FBI a heads up assistance-wise.
The above has been mentioned in several books already...
The Zodiac originator of the letters was in all likelihood:
1. Ex-Navy
2. Cryptographer and Radio Man in the Navy.
Even when revealing himself - it’ll turn out that all he is doing is simply revealing all - all being all Navy Cryptographers and Radio Men of the Navy that came shortly before, during and after his term of service.
That’s a long and indistinguishable list...thanks to DOD Navy training and regulations that makes such personnel non-unique location-wise for security purposes.

And while hes not yet ready to go public with his solution, he believes he has found the bomb location as well as the killers initials in that mind-bending stew of symbols. Paging Jerry Rivers. Secret location required. Paging Jerry Rivers.

When will a Chicago cop look at the alleged phone records between the Soetoro campaign, Larry Sinclair, and Donald Young? Or a better question: Will the
unsolved case of Donald Young be re-opened before Mr. Soetoro leaves office? Just askin'....

With Rahm Emanual being sworn in as mayor I’d bet on hell freezing over first.

I let a old man live rent free on a mountain property in exchange for gardening and caretaker duties in the 70s and his nephew visited him from the bay area one weekend and he looked so much like the drawing that I took a photo of them and contacted a friend in the Eureka police department to pass the photo on. This guy was a bachelor and worked for the Schlage lock company in South San Francisco. We never heard back...
