A top adviser for President Obama dismisses him as a "sideshow." Former Bush adviser Karl Rove calls him a "joke candidate."
But that hasn't stopped Donald Trump, who has captured national attention with his outspoken skepticism of Obama's citizenship, from surging in early presidential polls. He leads all potential GOP presidential candidates by nine points in a Public Policy Polling survey released Friday. He trailed only Mitt Romney in a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released last week.
The real estate mogul and star of NBC's "The Apprentice" says he's encouraged by the polls, but won't make an announcement about his plans for a presidential bid until June. Yet he'll be in Florida this weekend to speak at a Tea Party Tax Day rally in his first political trip since he began making waves with talks of a possible presidential bid.
Despite Trump's early strong showing, many still aren't convinced of his electability and analysts say he will have to go beyond the so-called "birther" cause and define himself for Republican primary voters on social, fiscal and foreign policy issues.
Cary Covington, a political science professor at the University of Iowa, attributes Trump's high poll numbers more to a weak Republican field than to Trump's strengths as a potential candidate.

Yup. The purists are a freaking joke.
He is more conservative than Romney.
I cannot disagree with your comments. Trump is and always has demonstrated he is no different than old BJClinton. Apparently his bottom line is suffering. He will have to put up a whole lot more than his mouthing for me to take ANYTHING he is saying now 'seriously'.
That is not an issue he is presently ignoring as he is critical at present of Obamacare. You do not address my question. His changed positions may be indicative but he is addressing the issues and Soetoro/Obama’s flaws more strongly than the other potential candidates. Why do they not follow suit if they hope to win? That would seem to be the question.
Sure, in the last three weeks, he's more conservative than Romney.
Upon closer examination of their records, they seem virtually identical.
Both were for abortion before they were against it. Both were for gun-control before they were against it. Both were for universal health care before they were against it.
They're indistinguishable from each other when you examine their records.
Mrs. Palin has been fighting the “good fight” for over 2+ years, and where has Trump been during that time? Since Mrs. Palin has never been treated as “fairly” as Trump, and that being a completely relative statement, what incentive does she have, at this point, to expose herself to yet more blatantly hostile venues? The comparison is apples to oranges at this point in time.
The MSM is cashing in on Trump's outspokenness, but there is more to their agenda than simply money and I don't find it too difficult to “read between the lines”.
Really? When is the last time Sarah Palin has been on a show that wasn't on Fox News Channel? Trump, OTOH has appeared on virtually every network, and even every show other than "This Old House" in the last weeks.
Why is Sarah Palin afraid of confrontation with unfriendly journalists, and Donald Trump relishes it?
"Your first two points are nonsense. Trump is in no way, currently, being treated as bad as Mrs. Palin has been over the last 2+ years, and that's a fact."
Trump isn't being "treated as bad" because Donald Trump has media skills, Palin doesn't - at all. Trump DESTROYED Meredith Viera to such a point leftists were calling for her firing. Sarah Palin withered in front of Katie Couric. WITHERED.
"The comparison is apples to oranges at this point in time."
We agree - Donald Trump is a media juggernaut, and Palin is a media paper tiger - apples & oranges.
Apparently you missed the speech she just gave in Madison. Millions of other people didn't.
Game On!
I like Palin also. Just not sure who is more electable in November, Palin or Trump.
Upon closer examination of their records, they seem virtually identical.
When, ever, has Romney insisted on leveling the playing field in China's economic war against the USA.
When, ever, has Romney insisted on "making legal immigration difficult, and making illegal immigration impossible"?
When, ever, has Romney insisted on reviving the manufacturing base of the USA, drilling in the USA for oil and gas, reducing the monstrosity of government so that small businesses and individuals can once again prosper in the USA?
Wrong Iliad allusion.
We are the Greeks, and are sick and tired of none of our champions having the courage to take on the Trojan's Hector.
Trump comes along, takes the battle to Obama, and we look forward to Obama being dragged behind Trump's chariot.
Palin is not running against Trump, and Trump is not running against Palin. Neither is running against Bachmann, and vice versa.
We could not have defeated Germany in World War II with just one General, or just one point of attack, or even one whole country. Our success against the NAZIs required many Generals, many deceptive operations, many fronts, several allied nations, a common recognition of "who the real enemy is", and a common determination to defeat that enemy.
Our common enemy today is a communist/muslim alliance that is hell-bent on the destruction of the USA specifically, and Western Civilization in general, and the worst of them are rooted among us, not "over there".
RINOs don't want to fight the enemy; they just insist on picking up the spoils from our destruction.
Spot on. It's only Palin & Trump that show any of this.
Savage has had Trump on at least twice.
I have no idea. I'm not an expert on Mitt Romney. BUT, I have never heard Donald Trump talk about ANY of these issues either, before the last several weeks. So, you'll forgive me if I'm skeptical about his current positions on these topics as well.
I do however, remember reading a quote from Trump saying that he thought Obama could be the best president ever. I'm not aware of any of the current GOP candidates, including Romney, ever make such a claim.
To me,....Rush has it right!
The media folks just don’t get it. Neither does Karl Rove, etc. Mr. Trump has not hit a Republican/Conservative nerve, he has hit the entire voting group of Americans across the board, excluding only the extreme left-wing Democrats that continue to cling to failed POTUS Obama!!! The overall number of American voters have POTUS Obama pegged to a “tee”. Candidly, he is hated widely, probably more then GW Bush was hated. “The Donald” gets it, he attacks Obama where it hurts, the birth issue, Farrakhan, Ayres, Wright, all the radicals, etc. Trump knows Obama hates America and...is doing his utmost to bankrupt the nation and destroy our freedom. Reminds me of Big Brother & the novel, “1984”!!! That’s Obama and his locksteppers. They would have done really well in Germany in the 1930s!! The american peole are crying out for a leader or leaders to take this guy Obama down, not by licking his butt , but by whipping his behind and exposing him for the enemy of America that he really is!!!
