CA bill would mandate LGBT presence in curriculum

Irene Rojas-Carroll was always troubled by the fact that her social studies lessons failed to mention people like her.

Important figures of various ethnicities, races or cultures were present in her history books, but references to contributions made by bisexuals like Irene were nonexistent.

Gays, lesbians and transgender people were left out too, the El Cerrito High School senior noted.

A controversial bill moving through the state Legislature would change that, requiring social science instructional materials to include the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, as well as Pacific Islanders and those with disabilities.

I guess all of the issues such as the state budget, school funding, low test scores and high drop out rates have been solved and now California's legislators can focus on the important problems challenging the schools.

Did George Washington have a LGBT Asian-Pacific islander midget military aide?

Oh, never mind....

When I was growing up, I loved science, aviation, spaceflight, computers, and technology in general. I was troubled by the fact that none of my social studies textbooks mentioned anyone like me.

Why are a person's bedroom habits the defining part of their entire life? One would hope we would teach our children to be more that just their "giblets" (GBLT).

Maybe we should focus on developing their minds - a radical thought for schools.

Maybe there's a reason.

“Did George Washington have a LGBT Asian-Pacific islander midget military aide?”

You just made her point. Your hate-filled history books left out this heroic person! :)

Why don’t we highlight the achievements of individuals?

Their history, origin, and bedroom habits are irrelevent to a measurable accomplishment.

I have no idea about the sexual habits of nearly anyone in history. Isn’t that how it should be? I feel hurt because no one ever mentioned the sexual identity of Hannibal. What rot.

What’s worrisome is that these Gay, Straight Alliance Clubs in the schools focus on the kids sexuality and have an adult adviser. I think adults should be interacting with school kids in matters of academics, sports, music, arts and such but not sexual identity and practices.

Don’t forget the Muzzies who helped write the Constitution and the Jihadis at Valley Forge.

When your entire worldview and persona revolve around your sexuality, EVERYTHING is an opportunity to take offense. Sad, really...

You could have substituted "race" or even "religion" for "sexuality". There's a lot of offended people out there!

“”I would feel that then I was included in the history of America, that I wasn’t being blocked out on purpose,” said the 16-year-old, who also calls herself pansexual, which means gender doesn’t matter to her.”

Pansexual — that’s a new one on me.
