23 “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is constructive. 24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

The earlier version doesn't have any different meaning than the later version. It's just more grammatically correct in verse 24 avoiding the singular subject "no one" and the plural possessive pronoun "their" to accomodate those who are afraid of sexist language. Both verses show Paul quoting antinomians and answering them. The later version introduced "you say--" to make even more explicit what somewhat illiterate folks were still missing in the earlier version.

There are plenty of other places in scripture where the writers emphasize the fact that being "free of the law" isn't to be confused with "being able to do whatever we want without fear of being condemned for sinning," or, as some singer wrote back in the 1970's, that Jesus "freed us from the sin in sinning."

You would have to go back to our earlier posts...I don’t disagree with what you are saying...indeed it is my point as well. I don’t think I would go so far as to say someone misinterpreting the NIV 2005 translation is illiterate. The statement “Everything is permissible” is too broad and easy to take out of context...that is why they changed it later I am thinking.
