Marni Adams was driving down Clifton Road at 7:30 a.m. last Sunday on the way to meet a group of her friends for their regular run.
But her otherwise routine morning took a decided twist when she was confronted by a coyote walking across Clifton near Caldow Street with a cat in its mouth.
Call it a maternal instinct. Or a passion to help an animal in need. Whatever it was, it motivated Adams to stop her car, jump out from behind the wheel and attempt to rescue the cat.
Adams quickly caught up to the coyote and began screaming at the startled animal in hopes it would release its grip on the feline.
“I was making wild sounds, trying to scare the coyote,” Adams recalled. “I could see by the erect cat’s claws that it was alive, trying to fight free. The coyote came to a stop, dropped the cat, proceeded to run up the hill, stopped once to look back and then left.”
Adams was aware of recent complaints from local residents about coyotes snatching pets that were running loose, and she has seen coyotes often as she lives near Knox Mountain.
She said the protocol for what to do if confronted by a coyote with a pet cat in its mouth didn’t enter her mind, as her first instinct was to help the cat.
Other than being angry and hissing, Adams said the cat amazingly didn’t suffer any wounds.

I can’t stand coyote’s. In the summer the pack runs right behind my house and they make this screaming sound, like a bunch of injured puppies.
I seriously doubt the cat thought it was at the top of the food chain since it has been preyed upon by many of the coyotes domesticated dog relatives since forever. Pretty sick how some on the thread find such hilarity when these wild animals invade the living space of humans and their pets.
As someone else said, would you find it equally funny if a coyote snatched a human child from its yard? Guess the spoiled little brat would learn that it was not the darling of every thing around as it might have thought. Ha, ha!

Coyotes are native species, cats are not. Hope they eat everyone they catch and everyone some careless individual turn out side.
Half the stories printed today leave at least one of these out.
In this case, location makes a big difference as there are coyotes and then there are COYOTES.
In California and nearby states, for example, the coyotes are about the size of a fox. Back here in New England, and eastern Canada, they are also called ‘brush wolves’ and are closer to wolf size.
And they are NOT something you want to go chasing after. In this case, a lone coyote being suddenly startled by the unexpected ‘attack’ made the quick decision to vamoose. Lucky lady.
The most often travel in packs or at least 2 or 3 together. In that case, such an impulsive action could’ve turned out very different.
they run in packs through my woods, running deer and there are a couple places nearby that I won't go off into the woods alone - or with my little dog! I had a hair raising experience that taught me the better part of future caution.

No, there is no difference. An animal is an animal, be it domesticated or wild. Your emotions might want to argue with me, but, the thought is the thought.

The cat is someone else’s property. They would be responsible for the care and protection of the cat. And a cat is not a human being. I would have let the coyote alone.

Huh? Are you some environmental whacko or something? That's just goofy. I have cats, and there are cats who wander around my neighborhood, some of 'em I enjoy seeing.
Coyote on my property is toast. Cats, not so much. Cats won't eat my turtles, which are all of "native species" and any animal trying to get at them will die if I have anything to say about it. Coyote, possum, raccoon, whatever.
Let's just assume you have a pet, maybe a dog that is not "native species" whatever that is. Coyote kills your dog. You OK with that? Not me, I shoot the coyote and save my pet. End of story.
I hope the cat she saved is OK and lives long enough to piss in your bushes, right outside your bedroom window, fool.
I love our cats. That is why they are “inside” cats. Life expectancy for them outside is a lot less. Cars mainly. Plus, ever since - as a child - when the neighbor’s cat killed all the baby bunnies we watched in our backyard, perhaps that jaded me against outdoor cats. If the owner’s don’t care enough about the cat to keep it inside - then oh well.
And to other’s on the thread that liken a cat to a small child - they aren’t the same. And yes - the coyotes are a pest.
We are lousy with them here in the Atlanta suburbs. One took a run at our Chihuahua as we were walking her on the leash one night. I had to pick her up while the fiancee’ brandished a maglight at it. We went out on the deck about 20 minutes later and tried to call it up with our dying rabbit call. We could hear it moving around behind the woodpile but could not get a shot at it. Wed I was driving down the main drag heading for the PO and there was a coyote standing on the curb waiting to try to cross the street. They are very bold.
I’ll remember that when I see a carnivore with you in it’s mouth. Don’t get me wrong I am a people lover too but if you get caught you lose.
That would be great to put on a t-shirt.
I saved a cat from a coyote and all I got for my trouble was this damn cat.
