MESQUITE, Texas - A YouTube video of a police officer using pepper spray on a baby squirrel has sparked outrage in the city of Mesquite, Tx.

A student recorded the incident. In the video, the officer is seen spraying the animal after it began chasing students around at Kimbrough Middle School.

Students are heard begging the cop, reffered to as Officer Davis on the video, to stop with cries of "No!" and "Don't spray him!"

Mesquite Police Department has defended the officer's actions.

Sgt. Wes Talley said the officer stood between a group of students and the animal because he thought it may have been rabid.

He stands a better chance getting rabies from another cop than he does from a squirrel...

My daughter and I rescued a baby squirrel from the street near the Pentagon a few years ago. She brought it home in a barf bag, held it, pet it, loved it, cried for it, and then we took it to a squirrel rehabilitator in Catlet, Virginia. We took pictures. It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life so far. That cop is a savage sub-human and I hope God punishes him.

That squirrel is lucky he isn’t an adult. The office would have shot him then.

Some child is bit by an animal and it later turns out to be rabid, the school will be sued.

I don’t know ... I like baby squirrels as much as anyone, but there’s always the possibility of rabies or something equally nasty.

A savage sub-human???? Gimme a break! No normal animal walks towards a person like that. That rodent was lucky I wasn't around. I for one would have stomped on it.

Ker-splat.

It got more consideration than the family dog. He would have just shot Fido.

No matter what officers do, someone will always criticize. If the officer had done nothing, the parents would scream. If the squirrel had bit someone, they’d scream bloody murder. If he had hit it with a baton, someone else would scream. The squirrel was NOT acting normally at all. Squirrels do not normally charge at or chase human beings. NO HUMAN has to simply accept a bite from an animal. Humans have dominion over animals. Animals exist to serve us. Pepper spray was a non-lethal and effective option for the situation.

Maybe he mistook the squirrel for a dog.

He might have thought it was a chihuahua.

Yeah. It’s not like pepper spray causes any harm. Some people get really wound up about furry little animals.

Yeah... it’s perfectly normal for a squirrel to chase children and move toward humans in an aggressive manner. Yep... perfectly normal. We should all bow before our new squirrel masters.

Sadly, that's accurate. It's not really a cop problem, it's the lawyer problem that we allowed to develop.

If a small animal starts acting aggressively, then there’s a good chance that it has rabies.

Pepper spray is not the end of the world. Better than a kid getting rabies. I’d say the officer did the right thing.

Actually, that’s not true. If that squirrel was occasionally being fed by a human, it would explain the situation as much as the possibility of the animal having rabies.

Several years ago I had a squirrel in my apartment complex run up to me while I was walking my dog, look at me for a few seconds, and then proceed to climb up my leg, then back, perched on my shoulder for a few seconds, then climbed down my arm to have a look at what I may have in my hand, then climb back up and then down my other arm for a look at what I may have had in my other hand, and upon seeing nothing interesting, jumped off and went on his merry way.
