Sorry, no love for Hamilton here. He was the instigator of tariffs on imports (so, I'm sure he's well loved by many here). The tariffs, though, were handed out to influential businessmen and were the beginnings of crony capitalism in the U.S..
He was the original "living document" constitutionalist who believed that the "general welfare" clause justified any federal action that could be said to benefit the people.
And . . . Hamilton was the first proponent of an American central bank that could by used to fund big government operations by debasing the currency through inflation. Lincoln would draw heavily on Hamilton's ideas to fund the Civil War.
As usual, Charen is way off the reservation.
Seems like that is often forgotten about Hamilton...
