BREAKING: Computer Error Gives Prosser 7,381 More Votes, Almost Certain Victory
The Corner -- National Review Online ^ | 04/07/11 | Christian Schneider

Posted on 04/07/2011 2:47:44 PM PDT by dep

After Tuesday night’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election, a computer error in heavily Republican Waukesha County failed to send election results for the entire City of Brookfield to the Associated Press. The error, revealed today, would give incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser a net 7,381 votes against his challenger, attorney Joanne Kloppenburg. On Wednesday, Kloppenburg declared victory after the AP reported she finished the election with a 204-vote lead, out of nearly 1.5 million votes cast.

On election night, AP results showed a turnout of 110,000 voters in Waukesha County — well short of the 180,000 voters that turned out last November, and 42 percent of the county’s total turnout. By comparison, nearly 90 percent of Dane County voters who cast a ballot in November turned out to vote for Kloppenburg.

Prior to the election, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus was heavily criticized for her decision to keep the county results on an antiquated personal computer, rather than upgrade to a new data system being utilized statewide. Nickolaus cited security concerns for keeping the data herself — yet when she reported the data, it did not include the City of Brookfield, whose residents cast nearly 14,000 votes.

Throughout the day Thursday, official canvass numbers flipped the lead back and forth between Prosser and Kloppenburg. While many believed a recount was inevitable, the addition of the Brookfield votes for Prosser could push the justice’s lead beyond the legal threshold that would trigger an automatic recount. Under state law, Kloppenburg could still ask for a recount up to three days after the official canvass, but would have to pay for it herself.

More details as they become available.

it is not official until it is officially reported via canvassing, with an april 15 deadline. all the numbers one sees on election night are *unofficial.* the fact is that they usually are or are close to accurate. but the system did not break down because the system has not reported any — repeat, *any* — official counts yet, except those reported by canvassing, which began today.

Incompetence? Perhaps, perhaps not. ;)

In poker, it’s called suckering the biggest loudmouth at the table to put all his chips on the table, then forcing him to draw to an inside straight.

Awesome, if it holds up. (Though the headline doesn't make it clear that it was the correction of the error that went Prosser's way).

In any event, I picked the wrong year to quit drinking.

Please pardon the smell...I was just wading in the DU swamp.* hoping this washes off*
Anyway, there’s a post on DU that reads:

“Look! Now the GOP is cheating!”

It’s the ‘Now’ that catches me. As in ‘first the Dems cheat (fake ballots etc.) and ‘Now’ the GOP is cheating? (adding actual, tallied votes to the overall count).

I'm not a follower of Hannity, so a discussion about him isn't an option for me. But if you really want to worry about people eating up bandwidth, go chase after the folks who have posted at least 7 articles about this news in the last 45 minutes or so, including 3 repostings of this particular article.

Or, you know, just celebrate the thought that a leftist may have been defeated at the polls, and try not to worry so much about the bandwidth eaten up by a single off-topic post.

Voter turnout was only 42% in heavily conservative and Republican Waukesha County (63% for Palin/McCain). Only 42%!

Voter turnout was 90% in heavily liberal and Democrat Waukesha County (74% for Obama/Biden). 90%!

Conservatives and Republicans lose not because of union thugs, but because too many conservatives don't vote!

While I agree with you for the most part - I am not sure that 90% of Dems actually voted and that those Dems who did vote were legally permitted to do so. Just sayin’...

It’s brilliant when you think about it, demand that you keep your own computer off-line, then it is an easy matter to just keep a town out until later.

Well, there is a tiny fiber of relevancy to the old computer dialogue. But yeah, I somehow feel this can’t be true until we get a full report on what Hannity had for breakfast on this day in 1975.
