Today, a memorial was created at the Jasco Food Mart at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Woodrow Wilson Avenue where the officer shot and killed 47-year-old Connell Lindsey Thursday night. He reportedly had a knife and was threatening the manager.
Councilman Kenneth Stokes, who represents the area, says he has received several complaints about employees at this store in the past saying they've threaten customers.
"This location has been accused of everything from cheating patrons and having a bat. Also, they have a button and lock you in there and beat you with a baseball bat, comments Stokes.
But, not everyone involved believes the police officer acted in self defense or to protect others.
"He didn't have no weapon or nothing in his hand," claims Charles Green, Lindseys brother-in-law.
"He had a knife in his hand and said I kill you," argues the store employee.
Surgit Singh says Lindsey was intoxicated when he arrived at the convenience store. Green says he saw the shooting. He claims Lindsey was sober when the store manager accused him of slashing his car tires.
"He (Lindsey) started walking and he got about five to six feet away with his back to them. This man came out of the store and started cursing," recalls Green.
Singh says when police arrived, officers ordered the manager back into the store. Police say the officer told Lindsey twice to drop the knife. And, when he didn't, the officer shot him. But, Green says things happened differently.
"I heard four shots, they say it was two. How is that justified? That's senseless force, it is un-necessary killing," exclaims Green.
Stokes says he disappointed that the JPD officer used deadly force.
"We paid thousands of dollars for tasers. Why not use a taser?

It's tough to tell which witnesses are more credible, huh?
Nothing good ever happens at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Woodrow Wilson Avenue.
WHAT CITY IS THIS? AND YES, I’M SCREAMING. HOW CAN YOU POST AND NOT TELL WHAT CITY OR STATE IT’S IN.
Click. The. Link. Jackson, MS.
Looks like Jackson, MS.
A memorial would be cool on the Santa Fe or Chisolm Trails, you know, “John Smith Killed by Indians at this spot in 1871,” but at the Jasco Food Mart at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive?
Chaos City in the state of Insanity?
I knew this was going to be a racial problem as soon as I saw the first news report the other night, and now Kenny Stokes has his face in it.
Is he the local Quanell No. 10?
No this is the city formerly known as Jackson Ms.
So Sad to say but true like so many other once great places in America,
Never get between Kenny and camera!!
The Magical Mischief Tour missed this one? Shame on him.
Kenny Stokes is a racist, City Councilman. Need I mention he’s black?
Interesting way to treat shoplifters.
Um, I know the guy Singh and even though he enjoys a bottle of Johnny Walker every blue moon, he’s a pretty reliable guy. There are a lot of Punjabi Indians and Lebanese that own liquor and convenience stores throughout the Hinds county area. It really is stupid to say “Well, they’re just beating up on innocent black people,” like the racist Stokes is saying.
Look, Woodrow Wilson and MLK is a beat down part of West Jackson, and Kenny Stokes knows that its a guy trying to rob a store for crack. These city council members will go on about how horribly racist everyone is and those idiots will still allocate money to personal projects instead of...oh...say paving Raymond Road or providing tax breaks and cheap land sales to get companies in Jackson again (Kenny, they all moved to Byram, Pearl, and Clinton).
Stuck on stupid to say the least.
My boss thought this morning that I was taking a flight to Tripoli this afternoon to fight with the rebels. The passport and wad of hundreds cinched the hoax.
Welcome to the jungle.
When I die, I hope my memorial is at the Jasco Food Mart.
My kids will say, “Dad always wanted it this way!”
