Workers at the disaster-stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan say they expect to die from radiation sickness as a result of their efforts to bring the reactors under control, the mother of one of the men tells Fox News.
The so-called Fukushima 50, the team of brave plant workers struggling to prevent a meltdown to four reactors critically damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, are being repeatedly exposed to dangerously high radioactive levels as they attempt to bring vital cooling systems back online.
Speaking tearfully through an interpreter by phone, the mother of a 32-year-old worker said: My son and his colleagues have discussed it at length and they have committed themselves to die if necessary to save the nation.

Prayers for them and their families.
A Heroes Bump !! On 911 nobody had any idea the towers would collapse, not to take anything away from those brave men and women of 911, but these guys understand full well that they are being exposed to super high levels of radiation day after day, to save thier nation.

The word heroes is bandied about too much thesedays.
These guys are true heroes.....in every sense of the word.
“...the mother of one of the men tells Fox News.”
Fox is really reaching the bottom of the barrel for its sources of ‘expert’ testimony. Their Saudi owners must be pushing them hard to keep up the nuclear fearmongering.
Excluding falls, heart attacks and electrical shocks (i.e. looking only at the radiological hazard), the reality is that the workers will, at most, increase their risk of getting cancer by 2% sometime in their life.
The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few...or the one.
Wow, 2% huh, and who knew we had such radiation poisoning experts right here on the FR? Amazing .... /s
A real-life “Kobiyashi Maru”.
Wow. Where’d you get the info on their exposure levels?
What does the dosimeter data say? I’d think even Japan would be more cautious than that, and there would be no lack of people looking for temporary jobs there, that could be sent in once for an hour then sent on their way with a good chunk of hazard pay.
It does not take an expert to read the tables that correlate exposure with the health effects. It's so simple, even a caveman can do it.
What's the worker exposure?
The actual raw data — that’s the rub. The plant operators may be keeping this hush hush between themselves and the Japanese government, leaving onlookers to only speculate.
Sounds poetically apropos, but in practice I doubt Japan needs to ask anybody to go to such a heroic length and might be taking active measures to keep it from happening. Not with the scads of people put out of work by the earthquake and tsunami. If they only had a handful to deploy that would be a different story.
You’re an idiot.
I’ve been working with radiactive components for the past 21 years. The risk is based on the cancer rate and estimated dose received by Hiroshima/Nagasaki survivors and is extrapolated back to zero extra cancer at zero dose. The 2% is based on the maximum dose that the Japanese radiation workers are allowed to receive for an emergency situation. JAIF reports that there are no workers that have received this total dose yet.
Keep your sarcastic sh!t to yourself and do more research and less fearmongering.
Seems rather contrary to use the word “inevitable” with “some” and “may”.
Based on this information, the story line is a croc. The point is that they know what the dose rates could potentially be and are limiting exposures to keep actual exposures to acceptable levels.
Moreover, folks who are going do die from radiation exposure don't walk around with full vigor of life responding properly in emergencies. They would at this point be so sick and nauseus they could not do anything useful at all.
These men are indeed heroes! BRAVO-ZULU!
