CHICAGO (CBS 2) The threats came in the mail and to date, there have been 25 letters that warn of nuclear bombs destroying America.
People who got them called the FBI and CBS 2′s Kristyn Hartman learned, the Bureaus Chicago office is leading the investigation.
FBI Special Agent Andre Zavala said, Yes, they alarmed a lot of people.
Attorney Tracy Rizzo was alarmed. A number of days ago, an envelope, with a Chicago postmark and a hand-written address to her private investigations firm, came in the mail.
The letter inside said, The Al-Qaeda organization has planted 160 nuclear bombs throughout the U.S. in schools, stadiums, churches, stores, financial institutions and government buildings. It also said, This is a suicide mission for us.
The writer, who claims to be Osama Bin Laden, tells the reader the nukes are remotely controlled. It was clear the writer wanted to scare me, said Rizzo, Yes, it frightened me. Rizzo was one of eight people in the Chicago area to contact the FBI.
Agencies in Oregon, California, Texas and Florida also got the letter with the Chicago postmark.
There are items in the letter that lead us to believe it is a hoax, said Zavala. There are several demands documented that arent fully coherent.
He said much of whats in the message doesnt add up, but in a post 9-11 world, the FBI cant let it go even if it does appear to be a hoax.
The FBI investigates every element. We cant take that chance, said Zavala.
So, why the threats?
The writer alluded to how families in Afghanistan have to live. The FBI said it will find that writer, and when it does, he could face 5 to 10 years in prison for each letter mailed. Anyone whos received a similar letter should call the FBI.
How do we know they don’t have nukes? Because Israel hasn’t been hit, the second they get their evil paws on one they will use it within 10 minutes.
Bin Laden was criticized by Muslim religious leaders for NOT giving a warning before 9/11. They said he should give infidels a chance to convert before killing them.
What kind of Nukes?
i would maybe worry if they had said there was one or two bombs. But 160 is just ludicrous. Although maybe certain govt officials havent been destroying arms like they were supposed to be and planning their own little 9/11.
160?? Get outa here. And Osama is dead since 2005. Obama is very actice, though, and Chicago is his stomping ground :)).
A friend in Virginia states the same situation in the D.C. suburbs.
Why are these people here? They've arrived after 9/11.
Something like sending letters all over the place isn't AQ’s style, so I still say it's a hoax.
Lot's of crazies out there .....
‘Jericho’ was one of the only shows I would tune in for every week...outstanding! Of course; it got canceled.
Dirty muslims.
If they said they had a couple of dirty bombs hidden, I’d be worried. But this sounds absurd. There’s no way they could get their hands on 160 “nuclear bombs.”
Agreed.
Oh, I don't know. Have you seen anything written by Obama, not using a teleprompter or Bill Ayers?
If they’re writing letters they either don’t have the bombs (dirty or fission) or can’t operate them (little different from not having them).
The only thing that worries anyone about threatening screeds is that someone is unhinged enough to write a threatening screed and should probably be removed from society.
160? 16? Heck, 6? Whatcha waitin’ fer, guys? CNN needs something to hyperventilate about! Talk is cheap. Detonating a dirty bomb would make history; threatening to makes the dustbin of history. They know this; that’s why I don’t believe the letters.
Al Qaeda has planted exactly ZERO nuclear bombs in America.
Somebody phone it in.
No one will detonate nuclear bombs while a Democrat controls the country. They are all on the same side.
They will wait for their true enemy to come to power.
I miss "Jericho"!
“State of the Union”?
