Rove, Palin Call 'Birthers' a Distraction

February 18, 2011

Sarah Palin and former Bush adviser Karl Rove suggested this week Republicans should admit President Obama was born in the United States and move on.

Rove, speaking Wednesday on Fox News, went so far as to suggest the Obama camp is trying to keep the "birther" issue going as a distraction.

"We need the leaders of our party to say, 'Look, stop falling into the trap of the White House and focus on the real issues,'" he said.

Palin, speaking in New York, called claims Obama was born in Kenya or is a secret Muslim "distractions" and "annoying." The former Alaska governor said Thursday Republicans need to focus on the economy.

A poll of 400 likely Republican primary voters showed 51 percent believe Obama was not born in the United States. Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told CNN he is not convinced the poll is an accurate reflection of Republican beliefs, saying most people "accept the reality" that Obama was born in Hawaii.

At least two high-profile Republicans refused to back away from the so-called birthers. Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota and House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio said they accept Obama's birth certificate but would not say those who believe otherwise are wrong.

"Well, that's not for me to state, that's for the president to state," Bachmann said when George Stephanopoulos of ABC asked her if Obama is a U.S.-born Christian.

I agree. The McCain ties still are there. Maybe they aren’t obvious, but they are there.

Her advisors stink.

It may be a distraction, but, its also evident that most Americans want answers. As long as zero and his minions are in office, we’re stuck on an iceberg as far as the economy goes. Might as well have a little distraction now and then.

Thank God she's smart enough not to go down the 'birther' path. Hopefully Michele Bachmann won't go there either. Trump's latched on to this to get attention and to pander to the conservative base (since he's not very conservative in other ways). Let's not forget Trump once advocated a wealth tax, has supported gun control and abortion. It's only now that he's possibly running for president as a Republican he's pro-life, pro-gun and a 'birther'.

Sarah caught very little flak from her supporters even when she first said it so there is little reason to believe that she will now. Instead Pawlenty will be branded a rino and Sarah will be ‘The next Reagan’. Crazy huh?

Two different times. Two different statements.

Trump has mainstreamed it. That's a fact.

When Sarah commented on it, the lib media was ready to smear anyone, especially her. And she completely nuanced it. She NEVER said, "Obama was born in the U.S." Like Pawlenty (with no evidence).

Bottomline. This poser (a well known Palin hater) pullls up a 40 day old article and runs it as today's news. Tim Pawlenty said it TODAY.

Yeah, in some ways electing a guy like Trump would be the same mindset that give us the joker that’s in there now. Or Schwarzenegger in Kullyfohnia. Or Moonbeam now for that matter.

It may be a distraction, but, its also evident that most Americans want answers. What do you base this on? Family, friends, co-workers I interact with don't ever bring up Obama's birth certificate. I have a hard time believing most Americans care about this. We have a real chance to make Obama a one term president. Let's not screw that up by going down the 'birther' path.

I will take anything that gets Obama out of the White Hut sooner rather than later. I would love all of his treachery to be voided.

People worry because they think it would get ugly. Truth is it is going to get ugly anyway.

Obama is a liar and he most likely is not eligible to be President. There is a prayer rug just waiting for him at GITMO.

Obamas crimes so surpass domestic birth that crime, if true, pales in significance..

America just cannot handle the head law enforcement officer(President) that "IS" a traitor..
It is so bad it is almost impossible to convict ANYONE of treason or sedition..
President or NOT..

THIS should be changed.. post haste..

Let's not screw that up by going down the 'birther' path.

This is quite an amazing statement. The poser in the WH is being asked a simple and basic quesiton WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?

How does it "screw" anything again?

DO you honestly think if Palin or Romney or any Republican candidate refused to provide his/her BC they'd be able to sail? Please!

“An old radio interview has her more in agreement with those who want to see proof....she back-pedaled this one.”

That was before Obama’s man in HI started bringing up the birth issue himself. Many are suspicious that their failure to find a bc in HI might be a convenient way of making the birther argument more acceptable as a campaign tactic. Once a candidate embraces it and commits to it, they will pull out the long form and prove them wrong. Or it could be a way of making us gun shy of the argument and to veer away from it.

The best way to proceed is for someone like Trump who is not going to run to try to draw Obama out on the bc issue while the candidate stays away from it and stays on the issues. If Trump gets popular support for his position, it will help weaken support for Obama. If Trump falls flat, then nothing lost. Palin will say that she opposes Obama on the basis of his record and that she won’t be distracted from his actions by any diversion.

Before everybody gets too excited about Sarah’s take on the Birth Certificate, just think that this “distraction” thing is a two way street. The Donald will have everyone chasing this BC issue down the rabbit hole and tie the Left in a knot. The more Zer0 plays games with this issue, the worse he will look and the more crazed will his believers become.

At the same time, Sarah will stay on task with the issues while the DemonRATs are going nuts with their man.

Allowing the media to continue to portray it that way - that anyone who thinks eligibility is important are “birthers” - is basically surrendering the fight.

I have never heard it better put. Ammunition to THROW IN A LIBERALS FACE when they start spouting their lies.

Republicans should admit President Obama was born in the United States . . .

How can we do that when we know that he has spent millions to keep all info. regarding his birth records under wraps.

People that worry it’ll get ugly are lily-livered cowards who refuse to defend the Constitution regardless of how many riots there are.

I say bring on the truth. Let the truth be told though the heavens may fall.

i can focus on more then one thing at a time, thanks

expecting members of congress to adhere to their oath and the LAW... seems to make me a crazy nutjob.

yet i’m also expected to send them six figure taxes ... so they can do their best to undermine me and mine.

yea... who’s crazy again?
