Michele Bachmann steals the show in Iowa
Politico ^ | 26 Mar 2011 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

DES MOINES, Iowa — Michele Bachmann served up red meat to the crowd at the Iowa conservative principles conference Saturday, slamming President Barack Obama as a Jimmy Carter retread, dissing the Mitch Daniels "truce" call for social issues, and saying she wants a "waiver" from the last two years of White House leadership. Talking loudly and waving her hands, a pumped Bachmann used a slide presentation of various numbers — the national debt, the cost of a gallon of gas two years ago the day before Obama took office, the corporate tax rate — to make her points and pull the crowd in.

Suggesting that Iowa caucus voters had the power to halt Obama, Bachmann wrapped up her speech by asking, "Are you in? are you in for 2012?"

"I agree with you!" she said as the crowd cheered, and added, "I'm in!"

The Minnesota firebrand gave the best-received speech of the potential 2012 hopefuls appearance at Rep. Steve King's conference and the crowd wildly applauded her brand of populism. It was a reminder that while Bachmann has been criticized for miscues in her public statements, there is a space for her to fill in the Iowa caucuses should she decide to jump into the race for the White House.

She called for a "fair tax" and said that the "current United States tax code is a weapon of mass destruction."

Yeah, I guess I wasn’t the only one. If you haven’t seen it yet...

Cain DOMINATED - nobody else was close in the straw poll conducted at the end of the conference.

>That’s why we need the republicans in Congress and possible candidates such as Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Newt and the rest to come forward in the media with this information preferably on sunday a day before Obama is to speak.<

Your right. But they need media outlets to want them, invite them and cover them.

We have lost the media and that is bad. It was meant to be the government watchdog, but it has become the government lap dog.

>I’m sure other Freepers could add many better questions that should be asked on sunday the day before Obama’s BIG speech.<

I agree, but we don’t have the ear of these people.
the big question is how do we organize to get the MSM to pay attention? Then the Politicians will pay attention.

In general I understand what you mean. But the Speaker of the House did speak about Libya but in the tone that he wanted the President to explain to Congress what the exit stredgy is. He had the chance right there to say we should not be flying missions on behalf of a group that we do not know yet.

Also, Facebook, Twitter, their websites are also part of the media.

She’s wonderful, but she should endorse Sarah Palin and run only if Sarah doesn’t.

IMO Palin isn't ready to manage military and international affairs and isn't doing the homework to fix that condition.

What other Presidential candidates were there? I am glad that she beat all the other candidates who went.

IMO, if it comes down to Palin vs. Obama, things will sort themselves out for you. ;-)

As a Minnesotan, I agree. I love her but I really don't think she's ready and the House doesn't produce Presidents in any event.

I'd gladly work for her campaign if she ran against Little Marky Dayton next time, though. She needs management experience.

Oh darn that free country thing gets in the way. I say both should run. It will be nice to have a choice for once in our lives. I actually want Cain, Palin, Bachmann and many others to run because I want the debates to be substantial and not this nonsense that is usually the case. I would love the debates to have case studies....what if type scenarios and see how they would handle it. People seem to forget that this is a job interview. When I go for a job interview, they always ask case study type questions. It sure is better than asking will you be prepared if the phone goes off at 3 am but don’t give any substance to the question. How about having all the candidates salute? That is a pretty significant part of their job. I would change the entire debate to something that would be meaningful.

I think it would be cool if the debates were preceded by the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer with all the candidates on the stage together.

I agree, with this kind of field, the average Americans watching the debates will learn something vital. They all explain themselves and their ideology with such class.

This will be far better than ‘08. I also believe that we will get behind one candidate early, to prevent another McCain, Romney or Huckster from taking the show.

That’s Bolton’s gig.

I don’t think he did anything for the UN when he was Ambassador. He had a ton of lip talk but we are still here. If he was serious, he would have through them out of our country to Paris or something.

That is rather strange sounding being that both Palin and Bachmann realize the dire straits this country is in and support each other. Neither are in it for any competition or ego trip.

I think that either of them would be a fine candidate, but I’m committed to Sarah Palin first. I think Sarah deserves the shot in 2012.

That is a 100 percent incredible idea. You know if we could get all the FREEPERS together to come up with debate ideas that would be so fantastic. Of course we would get them all together ready to go, send them to the RNC and they would just throw them away.....UGH!!!!

You're probably right about them throwing our ideas away. I can't remember a time when the GOP leadership was ever influenced by anything I've said.

They listen to their own drummers.

And, maybe that's just as well.
