Putin says concerned by civilian deaths in Libya - Compares No-Fly Zone to NATO bombing of Serbia

BELGRADE, March 23 (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday he was concerned by the number of civilian deaths in Libya, in a jibe aimed at the West as fellow Slav nation Serbia prepared to mark its bombing by NATO.

Russia did not use its veto power and instead abstained from the vote on the U.N. Security Council resolution authorising the use of force to protect civilians against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's troops.

"What do we see today? Strikes are being carried out across the entire territory of the country," Putin said during a visit to Belgrade, where he is expected to strengthen ties with the fellow Orthodox Christian country.

"How can you, with the aim of protecting the peaceful population, choose means that lead to an increase of deaths among the civilian population?" asked Putin.

Putin has been an outspoken critic of the Western operation over Libya, saying the U.N. Security Council resolution resembled medieval calls for crusades and those responsible for civilian deaths should pray for their lives. He has also compared the Western intervention to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The United States on Wednesday blamed Gaddafi for civilian deaths, saying his forces were violating the resolution and leading attacks against peaceful people.

Gaddafi has accused Western forces of killing dozens of civilians, but his officials have not shown reporters in Tripoli any evidence of such killings. U.S. officials say they have no evidence Western bombs have killed any civilians.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Tuesday some in Russia were taking what he called Gaddafi's "lies" about civilian casualties at face value.

Serb nationalists praise Gaddafi, condemn "criminal" West on Libya - March 21, 2011 - Belgrade - Nationalist Serbian parties on Monday condemned the Western attack on Libya - drawing an analogy with the NATO bombing of Serbia 12 ago.

The Serbian Radical Party (SRS) issued a statement accusing United States, Great Britain and France of a 'criminal aggression' against Libya by 'those who already bombed Serbia in 1999.'

The three Western nations are 'again killing civilians in order to change the system of a sovereign country,' it accused.

SRS, which was a part of Slobodan Milosevic's regime in 1999, when NATO intervened against Serbia to stop the killing and expulsions of of the majority Albanians in Kosovo, said that it 'most sincerely supports .. the proven fighter against imperialism Moamer Gaddafi.'

Putin is concerned by civilian deaths in Libya?

Why? Did we drop any anti-personnel mines disguised to look like toy airplanes and ball-point pens?

Gawd help us.

He's right.

Thanks to Obama, we are really, *really* on the wrong side of history again, just like during the Clinton Serbian massacre, when American resources were used to kill Serbian Christians so that foreign Muslim invaders could be given safe haven in the country they had invaded.

I agree, what in the h e double hockey sticks are we doing trying to upset another country? This is not a Republic anymore, it is simply an oligarchy.

I agree with the comparison to Serbia, we had not business going in there either. We always seem to go against our own best interests. Maybe our rulers think completely different than us. To them, freedom is something you use as a word to manipulate people. What freedom means to our "betters" is freedom from the rules and constraints of us Po' Folks. Justice is truly JUST US with the power and money.

Putin is an attention whore. He is screwing us assuming that the world forgot the atrocities he has committed against the republic of Georgia.

Qaddafi's Serbian TV Interview Result Of Close Belgrade-Tripoli Ties - February 28, 2011 - After the breakup of Yugoslavia....Qaddafi remained a rare friend of the regime of Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s.

I agree with Putin, but would have asked him how did Russia managed to spend nine years in Afghanistan without causing civilian deaths? How did they distinguish crazed muslim killers from reasonable no-killer regular folks?
They all dress the same and wave guns in the air for entertainment.

All foaming-at-the-mouth mass murdering, baby killer islamic terrorists do that, too.

“Gawd help us.

I would agree with that assessment, we are siding against a semi-reformed terrorist by supporting known terrorist like the Muslim brotherhood. In addition we are destabilizing the whole region as now every other rebel will be gunning to take down his countries government. The whole middle east could catch fire because of this idiocy.

That said, Putin shaking his finger at us while decrying civilian deaths is kind of like the pot calling the kettle black.

when American resources were used to kill Serbian Christians so that foreign Muslim invaders could be given safe haven in the country they had invaded.

Not only did Clinton jump into a centuries-old mutual hatred civil war, but we helped the wrong side!

It all began when the Ottomans invaded the area, the Serbian Christians prepared to fight to the bitter end, and the Bosnian Christians rolled over and converted to islam en masse, and even fought against their own culture on the muslim side. Hoping they would be brutalized last...

I am surprised that the Bent One didn't know that.
But I'm not surprised that the African Moses, the Great Uniter, is clueless about that.

American government education shines through once again.

Do you have *any* idea who the Muslim Brotherhood is? They are the patient, more-evil branch branch of Islam that Al Queda wishes they were. The MB is who the "rebels" are in Libya. They are who "America" is now supporting in this inter-Muslim war.

You assert that the Muslim Brotherhood is who the rebels in Libya are. Fine. Support your assertion.

Show me the value of your education, Dr.

PS. What's with the picture from 1940? Are we going to war with the Germans again or something?

(Sigh)

Come back to me after you've done the bare minimum of research. You're embarrassing yourself, and I won't be a part of it.

Yes, I know it's Wikipedia, but this segment is beyond question:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Libya

Qadhafi has been forthright in his belief in the perfection of Islam and his desire to propagate it. His commitment to the open propagation of Islam, among other reasons, has caused him to oppose the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian-based fundamentalist movement that has used clandestine and sometimes subversive means to spread Islam and to eliminate Western influences. Although the brotherhood's activities in Libya were banned in the mid-1980s, it was present in the country but maintained a low profile (see Religious Opposition, ch. 4). In 1983 a member of the brotherhood was executed in Tripoli, and in 1986 a group of brotherhood adherents was arrested after the murder of a high-ranking political official in Benghazi Spread group the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya and in particular the city of Benghazi and Al Bayda, Derna and Ajdabiya . Qadhafi has challenged the brotherhood to establish itself openly in non-Muslim countries and has promised its leaders that, if it does, he will support its activities.

He’s just maintaining plausible humanitarianism. The Wests’ oil contracts expire soon and purportedly Kdoofy claimed no Western contracts will be renewed, he’s only inkin’ with Russia, China and India henceforth.

Outstanding analysis.

And bonus points for the phrase "plausible humanitarianism".

That should be on a plaque. Or at least a bumper sticker.

Your cite doesn't support your assertion.

Your picture is of a Jerusalem Mufti reviewing Bosnian Muslim troops, whereas Allied Force was waged over Kosovo.

You're not doing a very good job of imparting an impression of being someone who relies upon either facts or logic to formulate your opinions, Doc.

So try it again - Libyan rebels, Muslim Brotherhood. What's your proof? The fact that various organizations exist in Libya doesn't give you license to attribute control of the Libyan opposition to them. That's just a simple logical fallacy, but I'm sure you already knew that, and are just testing me.

Right?
