Wish you were here: Obama on sightseeing tour of Brazil's City of God slum ...

As U.S. and British air strikes and cruise missiles pounded Muammar Gaddafi's Libyan defences today, President Barack Obama was on a sightseeing tour of Brazil's famed City of God slum.

He was also due to visit Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer hilltop statue as the biggest military intervention in the Arab world since the Iraq invasion entered its second day.

The President's wife Michelle and daughters joined him on the five-day visit to Latin America prompting the trip to be branded a 'vacation' by right-wingers.

The White House has justified the tour as an opportunity for boosting U.S. exports and to help create American jobs, which are both considered key to his 2012 re-election chances.

With crises rocking the Middle East and pushing up oil prices, the U.S. is taking a keen interest in the deep-sea oil reserves that Brazil is starting to tap off the Rio coast.

In keeping with his 'no-drama Obama' image, the White House wants to avoid any sense the president is being held hostage by events or unable to tend to other crucial business.

U.S. and Brazilian officials and business leaders are due to hold meetings today to discuss investment opportunities around the oil development and an expected infrastructure boom arising from Rio's hosting of the Olympics.

Ah, Brasil! Captivating vacationers for 500 years. Powdery white-sand beaches lined with palm trees stretch out for more than 4,500 miles along a deep blue Atlantic Ocean. Music-filled metropolises and enchanting colonial towns are scattered along the coast line, while dazzling sights of a unique variety flavor the inland. Visiting red-rock canyons, crystal-clear rivers, the Amazon, the Pantanal, Iguaçu Falls, and Carnaval Brasil are just a few ways to spend sun-drenched days while vacationing in old Brasil! What a great place to visit!

However, if you are the president of the U.S. while Japan’s nukes are melting down, and while Saudi Arabia is at war with Iran over Bahrain, and while your country is launching missiles at a sovereign nation without Congressional approval when the president has no constitutional authority to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation, its a really bad idea, classless, and in very poor taste to travel to Brazil with your family for a week of rest and relaxation.

Hillary’s commercial said, “It’s 3:00am and your children are asleep. There’s a phone in the White House, and it’s ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether someone knows the world’s leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead. It’s 3am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?”

Little did Hillary or the rest of his voters know that Soetoro was just going to let the phone ring and ring and ring.

He purposefully distances himself from the ugly and the bad. War is always ugly, and because he's ensured this has the official seal of approval of the UN and it was a decision made by committee with some Euro nations participating, he doesn't need to worry about politically getting his nose bloodied like Bush in Iraq. If he came out and stood out front, it would become his issue when something goes wrong, and in war things ALWAYS go wrong. You might win in the end as in Iraq.....but the journey there is a bumpy path littered withe incidents of friendly fire, bad targeting decisions where you accidentally hit something you really didn't want too........ Now he will hand low....... later he will take credit, “if” it works out well.

It's all about positioning oneself to create buffers between oneself and whatever you know will inevitably bring home ugly pictures or otherwise put a bitter taste in people mouth. You want to be associated with the good pictures not the bad pictures. Simple-

Let Defense Secretary Gates tell the public about cuts on the Zumwald, missile defense, F22, FCS.........

Let Holder tell the public that GITMO isn't closing.

Let Sibelius tell the public about a more politically correct term to describe the so called “death panels” which indeed did happen.

Take credit and be there when political capital is to be made. Distance yourself from those events, themes and pictures than will subtract from your perception.

Remember- People vote based on name recognition and a “gut feeling.”
