You may be more correct than you know. Once, some years back, a Saudi prince was interviewed, and was honest. Surprise!
He said that the repressive tactics they use are not so much to enforce things in the koran, but because they are terrified of any Saudi who is not strictly controlled.
He sort of danced around this, but hinted that in the little known, dark Saudi past, his people were rabid killers. Once the blood lust was up, nothing would stop them from their rampages.
This makes some sense historically when you think how a small tribe conquered all of North Africa, the Middle East, and a goodly portion of India in less than 100 years.
The prince went on to say that the institution of Wahabbism was a blessing for them to keep themselves under control, but it was also a curse, since they could not ever stop supporting it, even if it would go against their best interests.
So yes, the Saudis are culturally and, perhaps, genetically insane.

The Saud family has, perhaps, the most unique genetic markers on the planet. In fact, I suspect it would be child's play these days to design a genetically aimed plague to wipe them all out.
