In the daily rag today, the headlines were dire. That the workers had to evacuate... You get into the article, and yes they did evacuate the building for an hour, then were back at work. It’s a pathetic display to sell papers and scare the crapola out of the masses.

I agree - the spent fuel pool is now appears to be the big issue. NB that they got the reactors at the other location under control cold-stopped and no one seems to want to notice it much.

NB2: There is a real possibility that there are crass political motivations at work in Germany behind their recent actions. The CDU just got *spanked* at the polls in Hamburg, and an election is coming up in Baden-Wuerttemberg. In B-H, the CDU (Merkel’s party) has had control for a long time - decades.

But the polls are signaling that the CDU is in trouble in B-H.

Well, guess what there happens to be two of in B-H? Reactor power plants.

Guess who is possibly going to shift the election away from the CDU in B-H? The Greens. And what do the Greens hate (with a passion)? Well, yes, coal. But they hated nukes before they hated coal. On the nuke issue, polling has indicated that the Germans want their nukes closed down “as soon as possible” by 53% of respondents. That’s a pretty big block of pretty hard-core anti-nuke people.

Enter the EU Energy Commissioner, Herr Günther Oettinger. Guess which German political party he’s from?

The CDU. Merkel’s party.

The all-out push to make a big, splashy reactions to events in Japan by the German government could be a crass bit of opportunism to hang onto some control by the CDU. Losing Baden-Wuerttemberg would be a BIG deal - there’s a large chunk of Germany’s’ population in that state, as well as a big chunk of their economy. And the CDU has held it for decades and decades. To lose it to the Greens is probably unthinkable to Merkel et al. I won’t go so far as to say that losing B-H means the CDU is going to be wiped out in the next lower house elections, but it would require Merkel change course on a lot of issues (like bailing out the rest of Europe on the Germans’ wallets) that she’s doubled-down upon.

If fuel rods have melted and containment has been breached (and I think we have a roger on both of those), it has already gotten out of control by definition. If control can not be regained, there could be more melting and breaching and so more discharge of radioactive particulates into the atmosphere. I doubt that anyone is in position to know exactly how much of what.

With almost zero leadership from the USA on this crisis, this will be Obama’s Katrina.

It certainly should be, but the DBM had an ideological interest in using Katrina to destroy Bush. They have no such interest in destroying Obama. Instead, they will offer rationale for his lack of leadership and exaggerate any slight glimmer of leadership as monumental.

I hear he's a magnificently knowledgeable bureaucrat who can look at his teevee and see right through Japanese authorities' elaborate ruse. Don't question it. Just accept your fate.

It was ‘out of control’ at the first explosion and has remained so.

When you don't have your own house in order, make sure you tell everyone else what their problems are and what to do. It makes you look important and relevant in world politics.

EU Energy Commissioner.

If a commie EU dork told me the sky was blue, I'd look out the window to check.

I keep seeing words like “could”, and “might”, but rarely words like “will”, and “are”.

I don’t know who exactly is on this man’s staff, but based on the usual organization of government agencies, he probably has a number of technical experts who contributed to the analysis that lead to his statements. The US DOE certainly has dozens of experts in nuclear energy working on its staff.

Again, they don’t need any privileged information to figure out that this situation is effectively out of control. They can see that in the publicly available information and video. As for me, I have a science degree from a leading US university so I’m quite familiar with the basic chemistry and physics of nuclear reactors. I know what it means when the utility company pulls all its employees out of the power plant because the radiation levels are so high. That means they’re losing this battle, and badly.

You have a very disparaging attitude towards other posters on this site. My advice to you is to not underestimate other people who post on this site. They may not know everything about this situation, but they know more than you think.

This is mainly the B team in here posting today. With a couple of exceptions, the real technical experts are all at work and too busy. Maybe we’ll see some better commentary tonight.

And in saying this, he sent stocks plummeting until the word got out that he was talking out his anal orifice.

Even so...we need RELIABLE info as to what is REALLY going on. Unfortunately, I don’t think TEPCO or the Japanese government is going to provide that any time soon.
