I’m guessing that this is a bad thing, but Reuters doesn’t feel the need to really say so.

Photobucket Are we ever going to get the real truth from the media? On anything? Hell, they think we the people are dumber than a box of rocks.

“Nuclear fuel rods fully exposed at Japan reactor”

IF that’s true there is another disaster looming. It won’t be long before those rods meltdown unless they get sand or water on them.

I’ve been hearing this from KFI radio this morning. What the heck does this mean? Rods exposed?

Should one worry about exposure on the west coast of America? Sorry if I sound paranoid but I am pregnant and know very little about nukes.

LOL. Not laughing at the situation but at the lack of information from Reuters. Great, the rods are exposed, but what the heck does this mean and what are the consequences?

Tepco says water levels have risen, and the fuel rods are now only half-exposed.
Tepco says it has opened the steam relief valve at Daiichi’s no.2 reactor.

Go straight to the source reuters used;

http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/

That site is pretty slow right now.

If they would be fully exposed you’d think it would be on —>> http://www.nisa.meti.go.jp/english/ but I don’t read anything about it there.

I'm not trying to diminish the seriousness of the situation...but didn't the U.S. detonate dozens of nukes on Pacific islands in the 50’s? Surely there was radiation and fallout...and it spread out in the ocean....but had a fairly limited effect on the environment. Why would releases from the power plants be any worse?

I understand that any extra radiation is bad...but its not the end of the world. The areas by the plants have been evacuated, and the radiation seems to be poised to blow out to sea.

I'm sure this event will be used to shut down nuclear power in this country (but somehow it will still be ok for Iran to ‘pursue nuclear energy’ in a seismically active region). The media will hype this up, etc...but in reality, we just saw the plants survive being very close to the epicenter of a monster quake, and so far they have survived the 30 ft tsunami without a major release. It could be viewed as a success story and/or learning experience to build upon.

Got the latest press summary from Toyko Electric Power to load;

http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/11031404-e.html

You all can read for yourselves there’s no mention of fuel rods fully exposed, don’t have a clue where reuters got their information unless they confused “fully insterted” with “fully exposed”.

It seems clear, they are not cooling down. Not only are they not cooling down they are MELTING. Mixing and melting.

Despite all the media hype that their is nothing to be concerned about, and we are all not going to be affected, is just that, media hype. Not facts.

I was translating the japanese news report on justin.tv and the rods have been “exposed” from water since the beginning when the backup collant pump failed.

The fuel rods are in their control rods and there is seawater pumped into the base to continue cooling while they expel gas from the cooling chamber to lower pressure.

BOTH THE TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE ARE FALLING.

These reactors will be cold stopped, but it will take a while as they have to use unorthodox methods.

I am actually impressed how competent and honest Tokyo Electric has been though all of this.

Here is a site that will help explain what has happened at the Japan's Nuclear sites.

TEPCO reactor by reactor status report at Fukushima

< http://bravenewclimate.com/

According to the site: "In short, the nuclear reactor situation at Fukushima units #1 and #3 has stabilised with full containment intact (see below), and all other plants in the affected area are in cold shutdown".
