NHK's english language TV feed just reported the explosion 11:08AM JST 3/14/11 in Daiichi 3 reactor building as probably another hydrogen explosion, similar to the explosion at Daiichi 1 earlier. They'd been venting hydrogen similarly in both cases. If so no more effect on the big radiation risk picture than what had happened before. However there certainly could be casualties from the explosion and it may move back their repair and control efforts. They're playing a live press conference now. Sea water pumping into Daiichi 3 still continues, the reactor vessel remains intact and they don't anticipate much, if any, radiation release from this.

Bloomberg TV says a 5 meter tsunami was spotted and an explosion-like sound was heard coming from reactor #3.

Likely another hydrogen-oxygen explosion directly caused by venting steam into the reactor building. It’s serious, but there is absolutely no way a hydrogen explosion inside the square building they are showing on the news can damage the reactor itself; it’s blowing out not in.

Fox is confirming it was a hydrogen explosion in the outer containment building. Serious but not unexpected, and believe it or not the reactor remains under control.

It was most likely the steel building structure above the reactor. The reactor itself is contained in a concrete drywell (looks like an inverted light bulb).

Please God, let us all pray for the safety of the brave workers at these plants.

Those poor people! A 2nd reactor touches off and ANOTHER tsunami coming in?

Maybe we can get one-way tickets for Westboro BC?

(Not that I hate the Japanese, but it would be good to see how a civilized people responds to WBC)

The building looks much worse than the other one. The walls were blown off right to the ground. More people ordered evacuated from the 20 km zone.

For good news, no tsunami from the 6.6 quake.
