David Cameron Knows What To Do About Libya, But Does Barack Obama?
The Prime Minister is laying the groundwork for intervention in Libya - and rightly so, says Matthew d'Ancona. Now Barack Obama needs to follow his lead.
By Matthew d'Ancona 12 Mar 2011
At the special regional Cabinet meeting in Derby on Monday, the Prime Minister told his colleagues that a no-fly zone over Libya would not require a specific UN Security Council resolution. This was as clear a statement of intent as David Cameron has yet made on the fate of Colonel Gaddafi. The PM would like UN backing, naturally, but does not regard the endorsement of the world's biggest focus group as a prerequisite for robust intervention in the Libyan crisis.
There are even those in the Cabinet who believe that Britain could impose a no-fly zone without American support. "Not desirable, but possible," says one. The very fact that such strategic possibilities are being countenanced at this level of government is remarkable indeed.
At the other end of the spectrum, another Cabinet source wonders wryly whether "some of my colleagues realise quite how big Libya is". In other words: do they know how vast an area the as-yet-to-be-formed coalition (military, not governmental) would be policing from the skies? As for the Lib Dems, Nick Clegg, so vigorous an opponent of the Iraq war, told Friday's Independent that intervention to prevent a humanitarian disaster might not need UN backing: "It is not about a piece of paper you sign. It is whether you are acting lawfully."
In the midst of this increasingly clamorous debate sits William Hague, who gives every impression, in today's interview with this newspaper, of being an athletic Buddha, calm and more than capable of dealing with the differences of opinion swirling around him.

Let Britannia have it if they want it.
Jumping into the middle of a civil war with this nitwit in the position of POTUS is a suicide mission at best.
Let the ROP police themselves. Let the UN and Europe rush into save the day.
Lol.
If Gaddaffi wins, he will turn Libya back into a terrorist-supporting Pariah state, and then we will have to invade it anyway...
Someone else should take the reigns on this one. America isn`t the superpower it once was. Voters in 2008 confirmed their desire to be a common UN member state.
Further, we`re broke. We simply can`t afford another military adventure.
If the terror-supporting islamists win, they will turn Libya into an al-Qaeda - supported North African version of Taliban-run Afghanistan.
Gaddafi fears force. Plus, he`s the devil we know. There are no good alternatives for us in Libya.
Hussein will let Cameron do the ground work and then take credit for it. Pathological liars can’t help themselves when it comes to bragging and stealing either
If you think Al Quaeda is going to take over Libya if the rebels win, you’ve been listening to Gaddaffi’s wonky propaganda machine a little bit too much...
And if you think the likelihood of what will be a strong presence of the muslim brotherhood and AQIM in a follow-on regime in Libya doesn`t exist, you`ve been listening too much to 0bama`s propaganda networks.
Imam Obama hates the English for waterboarding his Mau-Mau grandfather.
Why have we not already invaded...?
Because it is a desert full of $hit eating maggots.
