No repeat of Chernobyl disaster for Japan

Japan should not expect a repeat of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster after an explosion blew the roof off one of its nuclear power plants that had been shaken in a huge earthquake, experts said on Saturday.

Japan's Daiichi 1 reactor north of the capital Tokyo began leaking radiation after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami, and swiftly prompted fears of a nuclear meltdown.

But experts said pictures of mist above the plant suggested only small amounts of radiation had been expelled as part of measures to ensure its stability, far from the radioactive clouds that Chernobyl spewed out when it exploded in 1986.

"The explosion at No. 1 generating set of the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, which took place today, will not be a repetition of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster," said Valeriy Hlyhalo, deputy director of the Chernobyl nuclear safety centre.

He was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying Japanese reactors were better protected than Chernobyl, where just over 30 firefighters were killed in the explosion. The world's worst civilian nuclear disaster, Chernobyl has also been blamed for thousands of deaths due to radiation-linked illness.

"Apart from that, these reactors are designed to work at a high seismicity zone, although what has happened is beyond the impact the plants were designed to withstand," Hlyhalo said.

"Therefore, the consequences should not be as serious as after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster."

3rd party expert opinions are best at this time ... cannot trust MSM (including Fox), cannot trust TEPCO / Japanese gov. Way too many political agendas, when all that is really needed are good engineers and nations willing to help.

Just damn, that’s unfortunate. Glad to see the containment vessel is still intact.

Most experts said the relatively slight damage to the reactor was testimony to the improved security of nuclear power,

But much more to the competence of capitalism vs. the incompetence of Communism.

CNN was all but openly rooting for a Chernobyl.

No, the japs are civilized when it comes to this.

You can bet your butt that there would be chaos here though. I shudder to think how our dependent class would behave. New Orleans is a good example. Even if they had to drag their sorry asses through germ and chemical laced flood water they were bound and determined to loot and commit crimes.

Aren’t there multiple reactors in danger? If several blow that’s not a Category 7 disaster (highest possible for nuclear events). I think the Japanese gov’t is trying to save face and prevent widespread panic. If pumping in sea water — the salt has a corrosive effect and they are writing off ever using it again — this is far worse than we’re being told.

Seriously, how do you live every day? How can you get up the courage to walk outside when there might be a hidden swarm of killer bees waiting to attack you?

Any talk about Chernobyl reminds me of this site.

A Russian gal that likes to tour the Chernobyl area on her motorcycle and posts pics.

Always a treat, she's added some new pics from the last time I looked.

The is a solution. Senator/Astronaut Harrison Schmitt wrote a book called, "Return to the Moon."

As a PHD Geologist and Astronaut he analyzed all of the moon dust and rocks and discovered an interesting mineral, Helium 3.

This mineral does not exist on earth but millennia of solar wind bombardment on the lunar surface created this lunar resource. He proposed establishing a lunar colony and mining the helium 3. It could be the fuel for fusion reactors on the moon. Electricity would be produced and beamed to earth using micowaves, (see O'Neils High Frontier).

All earthly means of electrical production could be turned off!

With an unlimited source of electricity we could tell those middeast tyrants where they can stick there oil. Meanwhile the third world countries could benefit and we would all live happily ever after!

Aren't you glad that our Astro Naught/Presidense has considered this alternative energy source. sark_off

What’s likely to happen is similar to Three Mile Island: the plent releases a small amount of radiation, and its’ capacity to generate power goes offline, essentially meaning the loss of loads of electrical power that the plant was generating.

The big difference between this power plant and Chernobyl is the fact that Chernobyl lacked the containment vessel typical of your regular power plant.

Multiple reactors, yes power plants have more than one, but that’s usually set up so that if one goes down, you still have more to keep pumping power afterwards.

I would be willing to believe this reactor is okay, especially after having seen demonstrations of slamming jet aircraft, high-speed rifle bullets, etc. into nuclear reactor walls.

They are writing off. Salt water is a neutron moderator and Boron in boric acid is a neutron absorber. It also makes that reactor useless from now on.

Now, I just received an email from my friend that was not encouraging. It was answering a follow up I had about an earlier one he sent. He is a nuclear physicist by training and a professor at Georgia Tech, In other words, he knows what he is looking at.

The photo released of Building 1 indicated that it was the reactor building that blew up caused by a lot of hydrogen. Throughout the day he was pondering where all that hydrogen came from. It was a huge explosion to blow the roof off that place. It is not a lightly built structure either.

His highly educated opinion is that the BWR core has completely melted but has not leaked from the reactor vessel.

If so, then the fissile products, which are at the end of their life and at their worst stage of radioactivity, are free to leak through the steam relief valves and out into the atmosphere through the reactor building roof.

If true, here's what to listen for from the various news sources:

Some of the products, such as I-131, St-90, and Cs-137, are extremely dangerous. Some, like Ar-41 or Xe-131, are not.

Most of the gaseous effluent will drift over the Pacific and be lost. Fallout danger is anything within 5 miles of the plant.

So, take this for what it is, an educated opinion by someone who ought to know and does know about these reactors. Worse case scenario is what he described.

No Chernobyl or any of that BS. No massive exposure coming to America.

I think anyone familiar with nuclear plant engineering would agree that considering what the reactors went through, they performed remarkably well for a 50 year old design.

The latest designs use passive protection requiring no aux power for pumps and are far safer than these plants. We should recognize that point over and over again.

My Mom was an English professor, and she knew a fellow professor at UCI. When I was a kid, I think in the early ‘70’s, the prof took us on a tour of the nuclear power plant at UCI.

It was TOTALLY cool! The water glowed this really weird blue...I loved it!

I doubtif John could do that today!!

Heh heh, yeah, those were the days! You could legally go to gun shows in Orange County and buy open bolt Mac-10’s, no paperwork, you could go hiking in Modjeska Canyon and not worry about getting your throat cut, you could go grunion running, gather seaweed and build huge bonfires to cook the grunion, you could walk into any factory, building site or warehouse and get a job, hand shake only...if you worked out, they’d keep ya’, if ya’ didn’t work out it’d be your last day.

Speaking of UCI, my sister was dating a guy who was a PhD candidate in the cryo lab, he used to show us the most incredible things with liquid nitrogen...nobody gave it a second thought.

I used to wander into the radio station there, KUCI, and they’d play whatever I pulled off the shelves, if they were bored.

Man I miss the late ‘60’s, early ‘70’s!
