This incident comes as the level of water used to cool a nuclear reactor damaged in Friday’s 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami dropped to an alarming level today, according to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, heightening fears of a larger nuclear disaster.
As of 11:20 a.m. local time, a part of the “fuel assembly” of fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi plant’s No. 1 reactor was exposed above water, with a maximum exposure of about 90 centimeters.
Absolutely. And you can bet that your top state emergency management people are watching this and will advise the public if any precautions become necessary. The people I work with here in Illinois are top notch and this is what they live for. No point in putting yourself at risk for no good reason.
I think that's a reasonable, and level-headed response. The worst thing folks can do right now, is to start panicking. Even worse, is to start a stampede of panic, like some seem to be doing.
We'll know a lot more about all this tomorrow. We'll also be inundated with the screams of Chicken Littles, so keep your head screwed on straight.
CNN : Japanese Nuke Authority believe a fuel rod has melted.
:(
The latest quakes are occurring about 5-10 minutes apart and appear to be lessening in intensity. About 5 on the Richter Scale. I wonder why they are saying this?
It's 10km. 10km is just over 6 miles.
NHK said not all elderly and handicapped had evacuated, I suppose they'll be offered some of the potassium iodide the had said the gov't was making available to locals.
Awesome. Thanks for that advice. Will print it and live it. Hopefully we wont need to do that procedure, but precaution should probably be the order of the day. A tincture of Iodine is cheap compared to the Potassium Iodide tablets.
They don’t know yet if the containment was broken, I think that’s the main point. CNN is talking about a possible major disaster, but I am also wondering if the containment collapsed wouldn’t we see even greater effects? At Chernobyl there was a raging fire and they were dropping concrete from the air at some point.
Here the report is 4 injured. True they are evacuating the area but I haven’t seen reports of any massive response by mergency personel, which seems odd in any event.
After he said it was a melted down rod, they meteorologist checked out which way the wind was blowing...
He said Red Cross and then someone twitted him asking about salvation army and he said, he believes there is a salvation army there.
He just isn’t sure what everyone needs and the previous quake they got more blankets than they needed.
Interesting commentary from Japan...currently answering questions from Twitter users...previously was doing live translation of Japanese government press conferences.

Someone ws STOPPED from going TO there at 60 km. That was not the 10 km zone.
If there’s a salvation army there I think that’s the best bet- at least it is here in the States. It’s the only one left I trust.
AMEN!

I just remembered - I think my wife is alergic to iodine. Or some tracer that they put in her to track for a medical procedure. It’s one thing to have a reaction at the hospital. Another when your old man rushes in and shoves some pills down your throat in the middle of the night!

Me, too. He’s from Japan and said he believes there is one there.
