....which could suggest the containment building had already been breached.

Suggest. Good word to use. They must assume it has been breached. What the heck are they waiting for ?

Of course they reported the explosion - everyone saw it.

Japanese officials delayed in saying whether or not there was a radiation leak, as apparently, there was.

That would make sense. This from BBC News live news feed:

0943: Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano has confirmed the explosion at Fukushima-Daiichi. "We are looking into the cause and the situation and we'll make that public when we have further information," he is quoted as saying by Reuters.

...it really is important to know whether the sky is really falling or not, because some of your biggest collateral damage is going to come from panicbots who drive themselves or other, less sensible folks into harmful acts.

Can't be stressed enough, in my opinion. Thanks for being a voice of reason and calm.

Quake moved Japan coast 8 feet; shifted Earth's axis

The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

I’m impressed - the guy is saying don’t be caught in scams in donating - so be careful, many take advantage of the good nature of some.

It is confirmed it’s leaking radiation.

And there are 4 more in Nuclear Emergency.

So yeah, maybe one wouldn’t affect us too much here, but what if it’s 2, or 3 or 4 or all 5 ???

I’m inclined to agree with you. Seems that 5000 miles and rain forecast for the next week would create a fairly secure barrier even if the release were significant and sustained.

At the moment CNN is still saying the outer structure may have collapsed without destroying the containment, which should be further below ground. I hope that’s the case.

That is CNN for you. The building collapsed because of an Explosion. Was the internal containment vessel cracked by the explosion ?

I just googled, and any Walgreens, etc. will have it over the counter. I think it was the CDC site that said Adults 130 mg a day, kids 8-18 at 65 mg.

But studies after chernobyl said much lower levels also worked very well with the kids. (Kids more susceptible).

Beware though there are side effects and problems. most sites said “wait until you know that you will be affected”

however, it will also take some time (not sure how much, but it sounded fast - like in hours) for it to absrob into your thyroid.

How much radiation risk for us in the Pacific NW?

Impossible to predict currently. We should hope for the best and prepare for the worse.

I’ve been waiting to learn where is a safe place to donate- I wish Cato or Heritage or AEI would set something up so we could know our money was going to really do some good.

After the Indonesian tsunami and Haiti I’ve very hesitant.

Maybe our FRiends in Japan could direct us to places to donate that will get the resources where they need to go.

Thank you for that advice. Will rub it on the skin. Did that many years ago with no problems, at least that I am aware of. If your thyroid starts feeling numb, you probably are rubbing too much.

Could be intense heat rays loaded with infrared light coming off the oddly shaped rods. Pink has always been an odd color in nature. I have seen pinks and purples that were close to blue light. Violet for example looks a little blue pink at times. Probably just camera/tv problems.

If its Cherenkov light emmission we in deep do-do
