Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) said Saturday that the temperatures of its No.1 and No.2 reactors at its Fukushima Daini nuclear power station are rising, and it has lost control over pressure in the reactors.
Fukushima Daini station is the second nuclear power plant the company has in Fukushima prefecture in northeastern Japan, where the troubled Fukushima Daiichi plant is located.

Can you imagine the logistics of evacuating a 12+ mile radius of such a people-dense society as Japan - and with all the destruction to deal with too?
And given the Japanese propensity to low-key things - this is looking bad.
It is sicking how one gets attacked around here if they are not a neocon of some type. I don’t follow the norm just so that life will be easy. And I am not fond of things that are irrational. For instance I thought Global warming was a scam long before climategate. I saw the Rino neocons coming in the very beginning. Neocons don’t allow any thought that is different from theirs. They are just like the liberals. Decent is not tolerated. No matter what the facts. Name calling is how they try to win. I look at the benefits and risks of nuclear power. And I have decided that it is a bigger Risk than is worth wild.
Admittedly I have a spiritual side as well. And that does play into what I think. As I look not only to my own life, but at the life of those to come. But I try to do that rationally. Sadly that makes me a hippie in the minds of many here.
That information is irrelevant as to how much power TV’s consume in running mode. Look at the watts rating. My brother just bought a plasma TV. It uses up to a max of 800 Watts on a bright scene. His 27 inch CRT uses 105 watts. Not hard to figure out what happened to his electric bill.

I have lived within the the 5 mile “ERPA” zone of a nuke plant for the last 38 years. Doesn’t bother me a bit. Build more. Hell, build ‘em in my back yard for all I care.

You are right about that. This sort of thing was what had the seventies and eighties “environmentalists” worried. - I never marched, but did have questions about nuclear power plants. -
Trouble was, back then, the nuclear industry sent out sexy-looking teeny bopper female “reps” who just pooh-poohed any questions about storage, etc. and condescended to us. (We had one of the “reps” in our family. She still doesn’t like me because I had questions at the time.)
If they’d have sent out middle aged scientists giving demonstrations explaining more about storage and answering questions respectfully, we’d probably have more nuclear power plants here now. (With this latest one in Japan, I’m still wary.)

So the fact that no one died means that no one ever will and they aren’t a hazard?
If they boil off all the water and can't get enough in, it could get very hot there.
But likely not a meltdown. Suppression rods are in and this is residual decay/heat which I believe only last about 10 days.

BTW, myself, I have 20 year old TV, which I have on a power strip along with the VCR etc..{with the power strip off when not using, and two other power strips with lamps and stuff linked and really off when off. I unplug my toaster and other appliances when not in use...etc. I cut my power bill by $30.
I discontinued satellite over 2 years ago and watch 'TV" online and seldom put the TV on.
But that's my personal choice - and nothing to do with being 'green.'
It has everything to do with wanting MY money in MY pocket. And that is MY prerogative. Dam*ed if I care if others do the same. Not MY business.

Actually - wrecked AND WEAKENDED. Subsequent quakes, especially as strong as 7.+, can easily bring down the already weakened buildings.

Everything has risk. Do you ever leave your house?
Do you think coal is hazard free? Do you think oil is hazard free? Do you think hydro power is hazard free? Do you think ANYTHING is hazard free?
The risks associated with nuclear energy are manageable and acceptable when weighed against the benefits. Decades of safe use in this and other countries has proven that fact. Hell, even the French can safely operate nuclear plants.
The anti everything greenie / commie / human hating hippie types resort to emotional manipulation (IE: they scare people) to press their no nuke agenda.
I see hysteria based on ignorance right here on this thread.
