It’s important to know that the wave effect depends a great deal on the slope and shape of the shoreline, and the parts extending under the water underneath the water near shore.

Even a couple of feet of tsunami at sea, can build up very tall as the water shallows up. WA and OR have typically very broad and shallow beaches... so it could definitely make for some interesting waves in some parts.

FROM KTLA:

Tsunami causes significant damage in Crescent City, Santa Cruz; high tide coming

A tsunami from the devastating Japan earthquake hit the coast of California on Friday morning, causing significant damage in Crescent City, Santa Cruz and other parts of Northern California. There were no reports of major damage or flooding in Southern California.

Crescent City, site of a deadly tsunami four decades ago, appears to be particularly hard hit.

Local residents reported that about three dozen boats were “crushed” in the harbor and that surging waters significantly damaged or destroyed most of the docks. Ocean water surging up Elk Creek north of the harbor reportedly lapped up to front doors of the community’s cultural center.

Maybe a freak set of circumstances will create a strange wave the unaccountably flows inland and specifically takes out the capital building in Sacramento.

Obama could care less what happens to America.

he probably said something like, “Crescent City?” and he laughs like its nothing, and he makes plans to go golfing.

Idiot wanted to take pictures of the Tsunami got swept out to sea and the Coast Guard are looking for him, putting the Coast Guard at risk.

Darwin Award at best, pray for the rescuers.

The police need to drag these people off the beaches immediately!

I am in Crescent City. Tsunami surges continue. Harbor severely damaged, boats damaged.

Some gawkers swept off of beach in Pistol River, OR, but apparently all were rescued.

Brookings OR (20 miles north)...Curry County Sheriff says, “Commercial port has sustained heavy damage.” Some boats have sunk and several swept out to sea. 1 fatality.

We are expecting surges for about nine more hours, according to radio reports.
