Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.
Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.
The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.
At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.
The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).
Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.
"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.
Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.
Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

Ah, so there is a silver lining after all ...
Most definitely, coming fast and furious. Those people in Japan and in Hawaii need serious prayer.
Yes, SO close. Even so come Lord Jesus......
I agree with you..
Where abouts in NZ
I have siblings in Canterbury
Yea, as good as it is to have a FOX News, nobody can take a story and blow it waaaaaay out of proportion like they can. Or worse get hooked onto tabloid stories. How many FOX hours were devoted to OJ, Elizabeth Smart,Robert Blake, etc
Tsunami headed for california. Wow.
Well, I was thinking the other day they were over stating but, they might make me a believer. At any rate, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it, except pray and not worry. Worry is a pointless destructive emotion.
I want to know when the government is going to respond to this emergency or are they going to wait till all the people of color are dead( oh wait Bush isn’t in the White House anymore so kudos to the administration)/s
“Has Al Gore yet announced that this is human-caused?”
No but Hollywood making a global warming picture again. /sarc
Powerful video but the cameraman is a freaking idiot! They have this camera on this wall of water, and right before it’s about to hit a bunch of cars, trucks, etc... He focuses on something else !?? That guy should be fired. I’m not joking.
Amen!!!!
NOTE TO SELF: When you see the ocean pull back 300+ meters leaving the reef exposed, RUN LIKE HELL for high ground!

What is really tragic is that if you see the ocean pull back, it is typically too late. The best advice is if you hear about an earthquake in the region, head for the hills.

Or earlier, when you see all the dogs cats, birds, deer, mice, bunnies, etc going inland, grab your keys and follow
