A bureaucratic cover-up of a lethal scandal is coming apart at the seams before our eyes.
On Thursday night CBS ran a second story highlighting Project Gunwalker. Gunwalker is a cynical reference to an operation in which ATF agents allowed assault weapons to be purchased in the United States and "walked" across the southern border and into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. This allegation is denied by officials of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) or ATF. In fact, in a February 4th, 2011 letter from Assistant Attorney General Weich to Senator Charles Grassley, Weich states: "that ATF 'sanctioned' or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons to a straw purchaser who then transported them into Mexico-is false."
ATF Agent John Dodson appeared on the CBS Evening News to refute that denial. Choked with emotion, he told CBS's Sharyl Attkisson, "I'm boots on the ground in Phoenix and it has been going on every day that I've been here." Dodson was obviously moved by the death of Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry, who was murdered with one such weapon on December 14, 2010.

NBC must be mixed up in it.
From what I’ve been reading this goes all the way up to AG Holder. Looks like the first big scandal of the O administration and it ain’t gonna be pretty.
Lying to Congress is a felony, at least when us peasants do it.
It’s sad when Conservatives buy into the language of the enemy by referring to a semi-automatic rifle that looks similar to a military rifle as an “assault weapon,” which they are absolutely not.
Might be. I will say that the Washington comPost has been gelded by the administration, so don’t look for critical coverage there. The comPost is kept alive by it’s profitable education division, Kaplan, and the feds are applying leverage. Students are failing out in record numbers (due to over-optimistic recruiting?) and federally guaranteed student loans are at stake.

American politicians send guns south to Mexican drug lords. Mexican drug lords send money north to American politicians. A simple exchange.
Bump
This entire regime has been a giant scandal since before it was sworn in (twice), but I take your meaning.
I guess we know now that Holder also considers Mexican drug cartel hit men to be "my people".
“an operation in which ATF agents allowed assault weapons to be purchased in the United States and “walked” across the southern border and into the hands of Mexican drug cartels”
Can someone please tell me why ATF agents would do this? Were they selling the weapons to the cartel?
Suposedly so they could catch “bigger fish”. Or it could be they wanted to support their claim that all these guns are flooding across the border.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it was more than just “allowing” it. I was under the impression that they actually ran the smuggling operation, or were complicit in it, as an intended sting operation so they could nail gun dealers along the border.
Also, so they could confirm the Democrat propaganda story that all that violence in Mexico was the doing of American gun dealers. Presumably this was approved at the highest levels. Holder at least, perhaps Obama as well.

Of the articles that I've read on it that seems an apt description: "they actually ran the smuggling operation, or were complicit in it"
As sad as it, is it would probably be better to look at the international treaty violation with Mexico (regarding the guns entering their country) rather than the murder as far as going after the BATFE goes. The reason is that the BATFE can truthfully say "we never had any say in the murder of that BP agent, in fact if he didn't have the gun we were watching he would have had some other gun" whereas they cannot weasel out of the fact that they were directly involved in smuggling weapons into Mexico in violation of the treaty with them.
The only conclusion I have been able to come to is that somewhere in high places a significant sum from drug trafficking is affecting the decision to do so.
When the Attorney General publicly admits criminal behavior(not enforcing laws he doesn’t like), all bets are off and any criminality by any government agency is SOP. Of course, it’s been this way for a long time at the BATF.
It’s amazing he is proposing ratifying a treaty his administration is violating.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIFTA
“The Inter-American Convention Against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms (CIFTA), originally the Inter-American Convention Against Illicit Firearms Trafficking in the Americas, is an international firearms control treaty.”
“U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed that the U.S. ratify CIFTA.[2] Opponents are concerned that the measures contained within CIFTA could criminalize activities such as reloading ammunition if they are done without a license. Other provisions make unlicensed modification to any weapon a serious crime. Furthermore, there are provisions that expand infractions to larger groups of people effectively holding an organization responsible for the actions of a single member.”
