Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann on Tuesday reintroduced the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act," a bill to repeal a 2007 law mandating that incandescent light bulbs be phased out.
"The government has no business telling an individual what kind of light bulb to buy," she said in a news release Wednesday. "In 2007, Congress overstepped its bounds by mandating that only 'energy efficient' light bulbs may be sold after January 1, 2012. This mandate has sweeping effects on American families and businesses and needs serious consideration before taking effect."
Bachmann says the mandate should only stay in place is (1) there is proof that alternate bulbs save consumers money, (2) there is proof that alternate bulbs significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and (3) that it's shown that alternate bulbs "would not lead to a health risk for consumers, particularly those in hospitals, schools, day care centers and nursing homes."
The bill isn't the first "nanny state" critique to come from Bachmann, who said with regard to the IRS making breast pumps eligible for tax breaks: "To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump - you want to talk about nanny state, I think we just got a new definition."

Those crappy new bulbs can’t heat my niece’s Easy Bake Oven! That alone is reason enough to keep them on the shelves...
And she’s hot.....
She is FIERCE!!!!!!!!!
She is brilliant and a very intelligent tax attorney. We could use that!
And , btw those lightbulbs have mercury in them. They are unsafe.
or the Dems lecturing me that I have to buy Obamacare. F Dems and their stupid crap.
Tis the truth
Barry’s Government Electric (GE) isn’t going to like this.
Fluorescent bulbs for incandescent replacement contain mercury. That’s not very “green”.
Bravo, and hurry up and pass this. I was just about to start serious hoarding/stockpiling efforts. If I don’t need to, that would be nice.
I HATE HATE HATE the new bulbs. They don’t light up ANYTHING! useless! And I don’t care if it costs me a little more in energy costs to actually SEE!
This alone will get everyone's vote.
I want freaking toilets that work back too!!!
Let me get this straight. Bachman thinks that if the squiggly bulbs save us money, reduce CO2 emissions (as if that matters), and don’t lead to health risks, the ban on regular bulbs can stay?!? What the hell...
GE has already shut down its light bulb operation.
Thats how I read it.
If some scientific panel bothered to do the research, they might stand a fair chance of proving what Bachmann says she wants to see proved, though the effect on CO2 would be weaker than naively calculated. A bigger concern is properly recycling these little buggers. They may never break in use even to the point of completely burning out, but hauling a big bag of them to a “designated recycling point” without breaking at least one is a challenge.
I think the key word is PROOF.
Brains, conservative, a gun lover and HOT! What else could you ask for?
Right. This is pure and simple lobbying by GE to sell CFL bulbs because they have a higher profit margin than incandescent.
And while we’re at it, how about giving us our analog TV back?
